Wow. I'm so glad I stumbled upon this thread. This is where I belong. Take a guess what I'm listening to now. 
In fact, anime is what propelled into becoming an audiophile. However, before that, I'm always an otaku at heart. I guess I'm more of a mediaphile. J-pop is very catchy. That's probably why they pair it with anime. 
But, I'm really into J-rock and J-hip hop now. For rock, Home Made Kozoku, L'arc En Ciel, Flow, Orange Range, Asian Kung-fu Generation, and The Pillows are my favs. J-hip hop is actually mostly underground like Nujabes, Volta Masters, and other various small artists. Well, I feel right at home.
