5 simple reasons why J-Pop is awesome

1) Most songs in the genre are extremely over-the-top, but nobody cares because the craziness is normal! Awesome!

2) J-Pop is very diverse and contains influences from genres ranging from jazz and classical to R&B/rap and rock/metal. You have artists like AN-CAFE that sound like punk rock and artists like Utada Hikaru that sound like R&B, and everything else in between! Sweet!

3) I understand very little Japanese, so I can listen to J-Pop while I'm studying and not get distracted by lyrics. I also never get bothered by "bad lyrics" when listening to J-Pop, because I can't understand it! Can't do either of these things with American pop, rock, or rap! Ouch!

4) If you blast a J-Pop song in a lounge while wearing open headphones, you are sure to start a conversation! Especially when asian girls are present! This rarely happens with english music! Nice!

5) J-Pop singers are usually female, and they're usually hot! And the ones that aren't, are probably famous because of an anime! So you can just watch the anime and pretend that they are hot! Convenient!

Now, for some J-Pop!
Wooo Japan!

That's preposterous! I made an unbiased decision based purely on their sound quality! (which is awesome-tabulous)

1. I don't need the circus.

2. If you want those genres, go listen to those genres.

3. I understand all of it, unfortunately. There are many, many smarter and more articulate artists to listen to than current J-pop. The "new music" generation of the 70s of Yuming, Kaguyahime, and so on was so much better. Come to think of it, even Nakamori Akina v. Matsuda Seiko was better. Wow, now that I really think of it, even Amuro Namie is better than what's out there now. Utada is not so bad, though.

4. Blasting a song in a lounge with headphones! Even better than hello?

5. I guess hot is in the eye of the beholder, so I give you that one.

If someone has had almost no exposure to J-Pop, what are a handful of essential albums?I'm always willing to try something new.

I don't like J-Pop but I like Perfume... does that make me down with the Asians?

Uncle Erik: Utada Hikaru IMO. She's known in the USA as just "Utada". Some of her older stuff, like Deep River is worth hunting for a good translation of her lyrics to really appreciate her songs. Her first album, First Love, was the biggest selling album of all time in Japan. Her latest English album is rather shallow in my opinion -- lots of style, little substance.

Personally, apart from Mr.Children, who my wife is a fan of, and a couple of other artists, I'm not really a fan of Japanese pop music any more than I am of regular pop. I've got an American friend here who is into wacky Japanese rock here in a big way though. Not my thing unfortunately.

If you want something different, look for the Yoshida Brothers. They play the traditional shamisen, a stringed, guitar-like instrument, but often mixed with rock music. They have two kinds of albums: the Japanese ones which are mostly just shamisen, and the ones sold in the West which are shamisen + rock band.

I like Perfume. I actually don't have any of their songs though. I love that video that those three guys did on Youtube. Do you know what I'm talking about?

I have Utada Hikaru's Deep River CD. It was actually my first Japanese CD. I was shocked to see the price when I paid for it.

Yoshida Brothers are pretty cool. I only have one of their songs that they did for the Nightmare Before Christmas Revisited album.

My personal favorite J-Rock group is The Pillows. I like more J-Rock than J-Pop.

Does anyone still listen to Glay or L'arc~en~ciel in Japan?

I like some older Luna Sea albums or X Japan Ballad Collection.

The Pillows have some super-catchy pop-rock tunes. Any other recommendations for similar Jrock? Or just rock?
