best way to get album artwork for itunes?

I recently moved computers, and apparently itunes recently created a folder in the music folder, where all your album artwork is kept. Well, I didn't move that folder, and now I have lost tons of album artwork that I went through and manually added, one by one! Yikes.

So does anyone have any advice? I remember using an automatic program a while back, but it didn't work perfectly, put the wrong artwork in sometimes, and it didn't choose very large images.

I could use the built in itunes feature, but I don't want to create a music store account, because I just don't even want to be connected with that devil in any way, who knows what future updates will do to control my music.

I was looking at this app
Apple - Downloads - iPod + iTunes - GimmeSomeTune

So, why not give GimmeSomeTunes a try? It seems to do exactly what you want...
Another option is to use Google Images e.l. to find the artwork and manually add it.

From now on, either:
* Make sure you embed the artwork into the files.
* Make proper backups.
* Or both..

I recommend iTunes built in feature. But you need an iTunes Store username to use it, which you do not want.

I recently used mp3tag, it worked alright. I think mediamonkey will, but I haven't used it for that yet.

I'm not sure why the artwork wasn't embedded in the files already, because I have been manually adding them. I usually add album artwork by choosing "selected item" in the album artwork box in the itunes window (the box at the bottom left) and then just highlight the tracks, and drag the jpeg into the box, and it adds the artwork. But maybe this doesn't embed the artwork?

That is what I do, and for me that certainly embed the artwork into the files.
No idea why that do not work on your end though.

I am madly anal about backing up all my stuff. I've got a big pile of hardrives next to my computer

But I didn't know to backup the artwork folder. Even still though, if I had that folder, how would I re-attach the images to the songs? The folder structure inside the album artwork folder is completely insane. It looks like iphoto by date folders, except these aren't dates...

I usually let iTunes retrieve the artwork. If you don't buy music from the iTunes store, I don't think Apple would have any control over your music. Even if they did, you'd still have the physical discs. That's how I see it.

When iTunes doesn't have the artwork, I usually GIS images for the album and pick the one I like best. If there isn't a cover, I'll usually grab a photo of the artist.

I use amazon, wikipedia or google images to gather album artwork if itunes cannot locate the proper cover art.

I know fellas, but I've got thousands of albums that are now art-less. I can't do it all manually, esspecially since I already did that once, and it didn't seem to be permanent.

I guess I'll try that program I posted. I was expecting you tech-wizzos to post some crazy new programs!
