Krauss & Plant - Raising Sand query

I just bought this CD. I have already ripped 2 copies, one FLAC for my PC and the other CBR 320 kbps for my iPod. I was surprised to find Alison Krauss' voice slightly distorted at times as if she was taking a higher note than what was possible.

In the ripped tracks I also notice some background hiss, although very minute it is noticeable. Why is this? There is no noise whatsoever when I pause the track - therefore no issue with my interconnects or external noise.

Can someone shed light on this?

You probably ripped it at an increased volume than what its natural gain was.

There is a small amount of hiss on the original recording, as if it was recorded to analogue tape - the sleeve notes don't indicate if that was, or not, the actual case.

I haven't noticed any distortion in Alison's voice. However, the CD is mastered loud (peaks up to around -1db) and I've read somewhere that this can cause minor issues for some DACs. Although loud, it does have a wide dynamic range and a good, if characterfull, overall mastering.

BTW, I've grown to love this album - very unique. Can't wait for their next one.

It is very unique. I just feel at times the recording didn't do full justice to her voice. She's capable of some truly remarkable vocals, so captivating you just listen to the track again. I wonder if it's the mastering or just my equipment.

I have it on both CD and vinyl and don't notice the distortion you mention.
I like the album a lot.
