I'm wondering... with the Earmax Pro rated for 35-1000 ohms usage, might this be an advantage for the ES3X? I have come to the conclusion that my Triple-Fis do not sound great with the EMP. But I can't be sure if it's an impedance issue or just bad synergy.
Obscure question but relevant to me. Any thoughts are appreciated.
Like the other custom IEM that I reviewed, the JH13Pro hold their ground well against full size headphones. I once told someone that the JH13Pro don't really sound like an HD600 but if you like the HD600 you will like the JH13Pro. I said that if you take an HD600 and add better base extension and power, and make the soundstage deeper, and remove the slight veil over the details, and speed up the transient response, and tweak a few other things then you might get close to a JH13Pro.
How to sell something to catscratch:
1) Mention "like HD600"
2) Mention "improved transient response"
3) Mention "better soundstage" and "better detail"
Damnit. What's next, you're going to say that it's "like the O2" as well? Oh well, it's not like I wasn't going to get them already. Just waiting for ears to heal up.
Great review. Can't imagine the work that must have gone into it.
I have another amp/IEM synergy to report on - the AMP3 DAP/Amp from Whiplash Audio. I post this as a warning to others who may try these customs with the AMP3 without burn-in, as it arrived sounding brighter than my 4G Nano.
However, I have about 75 hours of burn-in on the AMP3 so far and it's treble brightness is taming with time. It does seem fairly spacious and detailed and powerful, so we'll see. I plan to run it another 200-300 hours or more in total. I used 320K MP3 with it on the internal 4GB memory and haven't tried it as an amp only yet, or with WAV files which I don't have (most of my music is ALAC with a duplicate as 320K MP3).
So far - The UE11Pro have the bass completely tamed by the AMP3 but it's still strong, and the mids seem full enough, but there is an increase in treble sparkle with the UE11Pro as with most phones on the AMP3. Anyone who thinks the UE11Pro bass is overpowering would likely enjoy them more with the AMP3 than with what they were using when they complained about the bass. The extra sparkle occasionally comes out as sibilance, but HiFlight assures me the treble will mellow on the AMP3 with a few hundred hours of burn-in. The low volume hiss is mild and only slightly more than with the JH13Pro, but it's not intrusive and a much lower level than with the ES3X.
The JH13Pro don't have quite as much bass with the AMP3 as the UE11Pro, but bass is not lacking at all. They still get the extra sparkle and sometimes sibilance from the AMP3 as well, depending on the program material like with the UE11Pro.
The Westone 3 and AMP3 didn't make as good of a pairing as the other two customs. The sound was more forward and brighter with the AMP3 than usual, and it wasn't just an added sparkle but rather too much mid and treble energy. This reminds me of the sound of the iBasso D10 with the AD8599 opamp installed which I normally don't like with anything except with my Senn IE8 and HD600. I also found the hiss with AMP3 and the other customs to be much louder with the ES3X plugged in, and maybe even worse than with the ALO Amphora.
I will report back on the AMP3 with these customs in about 10 days, or as soon as I think the burn-in is completed. I will have ripped a CD as WAV by then to try the higher bit rate as well.
