Hey Lou...

...congrats on your new headphone! It's also my favorite one since quite a while. I hope your partnership will last some time... Don't you miss your SR-225? Where is it actually?

congradulations!
after about 4 months, i'm very familiar with their sonic signature.
all you say is true. they are very balanced, i'm glad you like them with your amp. maybe they are too balanced for some. in some sound products it maybe interperted as "analytical". the difference with the beyers, when i try to imagine what's the nature of their sonic signature, is that their balance is feminine.
why?

1.smoothness - it caresses you, but it still can burst when time comes to it. but even then, you know they are the kind that it ain't in its nature, according to the more figurative description of their sonic signature - i can think of a very thin layer of butter, or a very thin layer of fog. either way, it's white.
2.their "controled bass" - leeds to my feeling that they let me taste purely from music but still i can feel the beyers are slipping away from me with their delicate, figurative side of their sonic signature i explained in the last paragraph. like a woman to adore but not to have on a lucid dream (=smoothness in upper and middle mids, amazing)
3.their transperancy leads to different moods from the music easy, is in their obvious balance, which reminds me the female motion when dancing. well...quite: you'll have to listen for yourself

so i find the beyers slightly colored, but it is minor relatively (to HD600 at least, which i have found to have an alien soundstage and didn't like much), and actually, for me, it's a character to fall in love with.

i would like to know if any of you find truth in my sayings on this great pair of headphones.
oh and besides that..i forgot to mention that..
THEY TOTALY KICK ASS!!!

gee, Lou, it only took you 9 months...
biggrin.gif

so, are you going to keep them, for awhile at least, or will you be going back to the CD3000?
biggrin.gif

why did you get rid of the SR225s?

welcome back, buddy. we all missed you.

when can we expect a full review of the DT880s?

Lou,

1] some of us love reading your reviews, even if we are laughing at your expense. those that have known you a long time can still remember your unbridled enthusiasm whenever you got a new set of headphones. I for one miss the "these are the best headphones I have ever heard, bar none" line.
biggrin.gif
(who can forget such classics as the D66 Eggos?
biggrin.gif
)

2] since you have owned so many headphones, you have more experience than most when comparing them.

3] I agree with you, HeadFi has tempered more than just you. Now we end up splitting very fine hairs whenever we discuss headphones (see below
wink.gif
). I'm almost sure that someone will quote your "... without the irritating high end and sometimes too much bass..." and try to disparage you. Don't worry, although I doubt you need it, we will defend your right to say what you think of any certain pairs of headphones.

Say hello to Debbie for me.

Adam,

I would not call the DT880 "analytical" by any stretch of the imagination. To me, they are too smooth for that. If anything their slight midrange recession and tendency to round off high frequency dynamics tends to blur their transparency. of course some may define "smoothness" as a blurring of transparency...

But LTUCCI1924, while I'll be the first to be suspicious of your ahhh "mood swings", you're the only one here (that I know of), that has actually owned (and therefore spent the necessary time with) so many of the phones I'm lusting after. For us poor people, share your wisdom and encyclopedic experience. We unfortunately, often can only leap in one direction and weak leg muscles keeps us from leaping very often.

A simple cross model review or weird chart/graph, or comparisons to animal species or something would be much appreciated. Seriously, please.

Besides... with great power comes great responsibility.

Is that last line working?

Lou,
I'm sure that DT-880 will have an excellent time in your living room. Although, the built quality is far from first rated, this fine phone has exceptional sound quality. Everything is smooth, w/ out a trait of harshness. I love the big, and relaxation soundstage on the Beyer. The midrange is liquid and free of grain as well.

yes, it's their figurative sonic signature i have mentioned that causes that. for me, it's really more then "smoothness" that's in the way, but actually not really "in the way". i love it!
they always have that beyer character.. as i said, it's there when they burst, also in other cases.
the signature also contains a feeling of pleasant to taste electricity in their "fog", with a sparkle. it has something to do with how the beyers reach and perform midrange on instruments like acoustic and distorted guitars. they are well known for being really good in this area. the truth is..that it might be too good to a point where it feels a little fake on some recordings - should i say, digital?
it's way better then the HD600 - take all of my comments in a little scale - because nothing is perfect.. it's a hard to beat pair of phones - i'm really afraid that i won't like the CD3000 as much.. since the beyers does so much things right.

what i would really like to see, is people trying $$$$ combo's to make them sing, like they do very hard for the HD600. i'm sure that on the right combo on the real hi-end gear, they will kick HD600 butt big time.
my personal feeling with the beyers, is that they want a monster SS amp to get the "kick" out of them - again, like a woman, mates with a man! but this amp needs to excel in the low midrange thickness in order to have a nice combo, i believe. i once conected them to a nothing special SS Sansui amp at a friends' house, and that has shown me what's the feeling of actually fly in a huge, windy soundstage- wind with impact. i was amazed.
but, top of the line tube amps can sound very similar to SS, depends on tubes (my EMP don't, it's a very tubey amp anyway).
i would like to hear them on:
HR Blockhead (rarrrrrrrrrr!!!!!)
Singlepower SDS
but i'm afraid i never will

no way. they are the most well built and smart design i have seen. you can throw them in your bag and fear not. they are very durable, and you can change any part you want easy. i'm sure that when they put out the "880 pro" (with more clamping force), you'll be able to convert them, if you like.
nothing to improve, as far as i see it, it's really german. metal!

hey lou:

you dont know me but reading one of your enthusiastic reviews of the headsave transit gave me the little boost i needed to hit the send order button and get one. it was one of my best purchases ive made this year (sonically speaking). and even though you changed your mind a week later -lol- i still enjoy reading your enthusiasm when you get a new toy. and i can tell that your really enjoy sharing your opinion and views of whatever it is that you have recently purchased. so lou dont let anyone on here or anywhere for that matter take away from your enjoyment.and lou between me and you--i personally would take it as a compliment if most these peeps disagreed with my opinion because from what ive seen in my short time here---if a bunch of people all the sudden said "putting two cow dung patties over your headphones greatly enhances the upper and lower ends" you can bet pretty soon youd see alot of peeps with s**t coming out their ears. so lou thanks for the beyers critique and remember "lou for president in 2004" " a vote for lou is.........well just plain nutz.
