What do you think about Michael Jackson's voice and his vocal abilities?

We do NOT consider his songwriting, dancing, etc.

Only his singing!

QUESTION
Did Michael Jackson have a voice changing surgery?

Answer
It's said Michael Jackson had surgery on his nose to improve his voice.
He didn't have surgery on his vocal chords to change them.
(From here.)

Upon a time I heard Michael Jackson (during an interview) saying
that he had had surgery on his nose to change/improve his voice!

Can anyone find that interview on YouTube, etc.?

Rumors abound that he's been allegedly taking female hormones
(note the clever use of the word "allegedly" to avoid a law suit)
to remove facial hair and keep that voice of his at the 12 year old boy pitch.
He's talking in a Marilyn Monroe Little Girl Whisper.

got any sample before/after the nose surgeries?

coz his pitch is pretty lousy in this studio session: YouTube - Michael Jackson - Billie Jean (1981 Home Demo)

the good side is, he doesn't need a voice pitchshifter when making prank calls.

Leeperry I'd like to see a youtube video of you singing Billie Jean just for kicks haha! I think MJ is one of those singers that you can really follow through with the emotions of a given song. My all time fave!

Not the very best technically, but prolonged falsetto singing isn't an easy thing to do either. Even harder is doing it while you dance like he did....

Also people that knew MJ and worked with him everyday said the high-pitched voice talk was very much part of his public image / cult of personality as he did reportedly did have a deep voice when talking 'normally' to people he trusted + away from the cameras.

For pop r&b's sake,
Give me a break!

Could anyone give any links or references to any 'professional' articles written
by knowledgeable people: musicians, singers, critics, etc. discussing Michael's voice?

I am not geeting the results of this poll!

For pop R&B .......name someone better?

Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder, Sam Cooke, Otis.....those guys may be better, but it's a different genre of music.....

I voted outstanding for voice alone. He was 'phenomenal' in the traditional use of the word in the sense that he created quite a stir on the music scene (a true phenom, and something to behold in terms of his societal impact). But of course it was impossible to separate his voice from his dancing from his stage show from his strange and quirky (but oddly appealing to many, at least while he was in his prime) personality. I don't think anyone can deny that he was an iconic cultural phenomenon. He had loads of natural talent (singing, dancing) and had just as much shtick as an entertainer. On top of that, his music was brilliantly produced.

Even so, I wasn't ever a huge fan. I did admire his creativity and thought his voice was outstanding from the time he was a little boy with the Jackson 5, but not phenomenal. He accomplished that in other ways.
