Can anyone tell me how much better (or worse) the RVG series is compared the original 1980s CD releases? I own all the CDs from original releases and I'm not sure it's worth the cost of upgrading? If they are significantly improved I'll have to spring for it because that's my favorite period of all of Miles. But I've always been quite happy with the original series from OJC Classics.

Curious x2. I also own the 4 original 1980s Prestige Cookin, Workin, Steamin and Relaxin discs together with the famous And The Modern Jazz Giants disc - is it worth upgrading??

I'd say it depends on what you're looking for. There's clearly an idea of dynamism in the listening field that the RVGs are going for, but I'm not sure it's better or worse. The OJCs sound more relaxed, because the accompaniment isn't really on the same plane with the soloists, whereas the RVGs seem to have all the instruments on the same plane, not so much foreground and background. Also, on something like, say, "Solar", the one-second that the RVG remaster clips from the OJC version makes Red Garland's opening piano chord seem more tense. On the OJC, you just kinda ease into it. Not sure if this description helps at all.

In other words, it is not a definite improvement, but will depend on how one likes the music. Will opt not to spend extra $$ then. Thanks!

It sounds nice, and its interesting to have an extra track or two and have it all in order. But, its not really necessary unless you don;t have the originals.

The originals are SOOOO much better. RVG reissues have lots of issues IMHO and I wouldn't buy any of them. If you want the best Miles on Prestige, get the 45RPM vinyl re-issues Steve Hoffman did for Analogue Productions.
If you can't afford (or can't get) the 45RPM's, then just buy the $7 OJC CD's. They are all flat transfers from the master tapes and sound fantastic - often, very close to the 45 RPM's.
Stay away from the RVG's unless it's your only option.
