If they do, how did things like this happen:

Stairway to Heaven - Dolly Parton
I Love Rock and Roll - Britney Spears
Piece of My Heart - Faith Hill
Ring of Fire - by Olivia Newton John
American Pie - by Madonna
Behind Blue Eyes - Limp Bizkit
Every Breath You Take - Puff Daddy

Lets not forget the worst cover in the history of recorded music:

YouTube - Celine Dion & Anastacia - You Shook Me All Night Long (Live Divas Las Vegas 2002) HDTV

Oh my... I wish I could unsee that.

Maybe it's just me, but I've always found Celine Dion to be one of the strangest looking women... so bizarre, especially when she's hopping on one leg.

Back to the topic. It's usually acceptable to cover a song live as long as you don't say it's yours. But if it's recorded and sold you need permission from the rights owner.

Where's your sense of fun? Horrible covers are a longstanding musical tradition!

I sometimes wonder if the younger generation has yet to develop an appreciation for bad art. Not everything has to be taken seriously, you know. Is camp truly dead?

And try the Residents' cover of "Jailhouse Rock." That never fails to improve my mood. Or Shatner covers, for that matter.

....Or Shatner covers....
I thought those were actually illegal through the "disturbing the peace" statutes.

So bad it's good.

I don't have a recording of it, but I saw the Bad Plus at the newport jazz festival and they did a jazz-style cover of Lithium by Nirvana. It was HORRIBLE. The girl started to sing, and then they slowed down for about two lines. I thought it was a mistake, but they kept speeding up and slowing down, and the whole thing was just terrible.

Yep, Shatner covers are hilarious. Leonard Nimoy's version of 'I Walk the Line' wasn't bad either.

There's also the Mike Flowers Pops version of Wonderwall.

I'm not sure I can top the videos posted before. But still, Rolf Harris covering Stairway to Heaven. I have to admit, it's slightly growing on me...

In terms of really good covers, I can't forget this, one of my favorite songs period. Of course, this may be just regarded as a take rather than a cover.
