Dan Lavry - presentation on digital audio

This is from the July Seattle head-fi meet-up. I had 2 days notice to get gear for this, so I was only able to secure a 1080p HDV, basic tripod without a mic. Next time we'll have him wired directly, and framed up nicer. All the same, you can here whats going on, and the matlab graphs are very clear. If you have the machine power, make sure and use the HD feature so the text is perfectly clear.

I worry about that as well, but think he's got tough enough skin to blow some of the trolling off.

Thanks

Thanks thisbenjamin!

Dan is really a rarity in high-end audio designers. He doesn't hide from his customers but goes out and engages them in person at meets like these, in the forums, writes useful white pages, etc., we're fortunate to have him so involved. Dan's been in the trenches actually designing successful hardware for decades and has been very generous in sharing his hard-earned experiences.

Some folks have questioned his motives, which I think is really a shame as it can only discourage other designers from joining in the discussions. Anyone and all ideas *should* be challenged but it can be done in an honest open way without questioning someone's integrity. At the same time Dan has the right to protect trade secrets. Besides, what's wrong with talking with potential customers if it's good for business and is done honestly?
Seems like a win-win situation to me.

My pleasure, I sincerely hope Dan is available in the future to do more presentations like this (I promise I'll bring a mic next time!). Drop a line to Dan if you want to pass kudos on to the person that matters.

Great video!

Computer/digital audio needs more people like Dan, there just too many snake-oil salesman with their jitter boxes/software, cables, etc.

a very enlightening and informative presentation.

it takes a certain patience and understanding of his audience to explain complicated processes in such a lucid manner. i think many of us could do with a better technical understanding of how things work, and the reasons behind them, instead of putting too much faith in the dubious claims of audio companies.

Mr. Lavry's argument against 192khz upsampling was particularly interesting, and definitely warrants attention.

Most of the posts here echo what I think of Mr. Lavry. I really like the fact that he's so down-to-earth in engaging his customers. This gives him an air of really knowing what he's talking about (which he absolutely does), which is definitely a good thing.

He's not engaging his customers, no one is paying him to teach digital audio theory or explain audio physics and theory to the board members - in fact he's paying for advertsing all the while. It may or may not help in his sales (last I checked we had around 10-12 DA11, DA10 owners here, if that) - he's doing this as a service to the community to champion the realities of audio, to help cut through the hype.

That was a very good video. I actually ended up watching the entire thing when I should have been studying. Oh well! Learning is more important than school I always say.

It was a little hard to follow at times. I've read quite a bit about this topic, but Dan's thick accent made some sentences hard to understand over my cheap computer speakers.

Still, I learned a lot. Dan is a very, very smart guy and I think doing more presentations like these will do a lot of good for the audiophile community. I really want a DA11, but I'm not sure if my wallet will allow one...it's between that and the Meier StageDAC as far as I'm concerned.

Any chance these videos are still available somewhere? :)
