Should Michael Jackson be called the Self-Proclaimed King of Pop
... or just Wacko Jacko?

Self-Proclaimed King of Pop of the 1980s?

or

Self-Proclaimed King of Pop of All Time?

Should the words 'Self-Proclaimed' be dropped?

How about King Wacko Jacko?

Michael Jackson's success as a pop star was nearly eclipsed over time
by controversy surrounding his strange and reclusive lifestyle,
which earned him the tabloid moniker "Wacko Jacko."

Jackson took another long hiatus between albums, giving the media little to focus on besides his numerous eccentricities; by this time, the British tabloids delighted in calling him "Wacko Jacko," a name he detested.
When Jackson returned in with a new album in late 1991, he'd come up with a different moniker: "the King of Pop."

There were signs that Jackson was grasping at his self-proclaimed King of Pop status;
the cover of HIStory depicted an enormous statue of Jackson, and he performed at the 1996 BRIT Awards
dressed as a Messiah, with children and a rabbi surrounding him worshipfully
(Pulp lead singer Jarvis Cocker stormed the stage to protest Jackson's hubris during the middle of the song).

It's like Emperor Norton I.

He wasn't actually the emperor of the United States and defender of Mexico, but I think he should still be retain the title.

Definitely the all time King of Pop

He was the king of Pop. Then again, most of the really famous people are a little wako

he was a James Brown hack, nothing more.

I disagree. Like many other people, I never really listened to his music until his recent death. I then picked up Thriller, and I've been listening to it quite a bit since then -- its really, really good. I thoroughly enjoy it.

well, he was dancing like James Brown, and clearly mimicking him...he was his main influence(he repeated it many times), but not nearly as talented

I don't remember all this fuss when the godfather died, that kinda pisses me off

I've got a concert on DVD w/ JB, BB King and Michael Jackson...and he looks like a little girl being too impressed to say a single word

Amen to that. JB was The King. IMHO he remained great right through his life. One of his last shows here in London that sadly I only caught on TV, was simply mesmerising. That man could make a glacier dance.

I understand that you are a big James Brown fan, but Michael Jackson was certainly no hack or simple imitator.

Total whacko.

Sorry, 10 total albums (over almost 40 years ???) and 5 number one's certainly doesn't qualify for king of pop in my book.

Average to poor singer. Great dancer but I would still take Gregory Hines any day.

I'd say he had some mental issues but he also had great talent.

In case no one here has seen it, Kanye West recently proclaimed himself the King of Pop since MJ died. He has to get custom made hats to fit his enormous, ego inflated head.
