Could I Outgrow Customs?

Hi everyone,

Right now, I have Westone 3s with UM56 earpieces.

I'm really happy with them, but will I ever have to get new impressions and earpieces since I'm not yet done growing? I'm 16 and 6' tall, but I probably have about two more years' worth of growing to do.

Thanks!

Cartilage does continue to accumulate as you get older, but in decreasing amounts that are tiny to begin with. This is more important for appendages like your nose, rather than your ears. You will definitely experience growth all over your body, but your ear canals will not change shape, nor will the part of your outer ear that your earphones would fit into. Young children can outgrow their hearing aids quite quickly, but at your age, I don't think you have anything to be worried about.

You really have nothing to worry about. Background: Doing a pre med degree. Although, I think it would be more useful for you to get the opinion of some of the real doctors on here. I just thought I'd throw my opinion out there. You may want to ask the manufacturer of a custom IEM as well. I'm sure they've been asked the question many times.

Same age here, but 5 11". Waiting another year to get JH13s...will stick with SE530s for now, probably..

not likely you will outgrow them, your ear changes very slowly over a very long period of time. you should be fine for many many many years.

yes, generally a refit is needed once every 4 years or so. it is simply NOT true that your ears stop growing when you get older

If you need a refit, can you get new impressions and reuse the drivers you already have?

I've read enough about the JH13 to make me very interested, but I wonder if the fit won't be as good a few years down the line. If it is possible to get the same drivers refit over time, then I'd re-evaluate my deision not to buy customs. I know I'll be able to use my headphones in ten years, but I'm not so sure about IEMs.

Any comments on this from someone who knows would be greatly appreciated.

considering i usually need a new pc after 4 years, i dont mind buying new earphones every 4 years, JH13s maybe i would ...but hopefully in 4 years Ill be making more money!

Every company has its own refit policy: Some do and some don't, some charge a low price while some require a lot. The thing is, there are several Chinese companies now doing re-shelling for a low price (I think I read $100 last time) and they have been doing it a few years now. You can get someone else UE11 and they will re-shell it for you using the old drivers.

If you need info. on particular brand regarding refitting, it would be easier just to contact that company. Do check out their website FAQ first.

Most people are pretty much done growing by 16. You're just going to get hairier now!

FYI - Ear hair can really tone down the highs on bright cans!

Your ears do grow as you get older, but by extremely small amounts. If someone found their custom earmold getting uncomfortable over time, it's highly unlikely that it was due to the growth of the cartilage in their ears.

There's quite a bit of information on this subject on any hearing aid site, and while children grow out of their earmolds quite quickly, you can see that it becomes a non issue once someone hits puberty.

To the OP, you may be cutting it a little close, and to be on the safe side, you may want to wait a year or two. However, I highly doubt that you'd have any problems.

Well i talked to brittany from JH audio and she said that at my age (19) shouldn't be a problem. or at any age past 13 or 14 or so. She said they can lsat a lifetime because your ear doesn't change that much. so idk...
