I notice of all genres....Contemporary Country gets the least love on Head-fi

Just thought to myself today that there's hardly ever any threads about the music of contemporary country artists.......contemporary meaning mid-80s and forward. (ie Garth Brooks, Shania Twain, Faith Hill, Reba Mcintire, Toby Keith, Clint Black).......I just find it interesting. Not that I myself have any interest in that genre, but it is very obvious to me that head-fi has no interest in this genre whatsoever.

Where the did the saying "Country music, the sound of pain" come from?

Ugh, thanks for reminding me that I'm rooming with a friend this year who likes country music.

I stick to so-called alt-country for current country music, mainstream country is just about the most formulaic and soulless music out there right now.

That's because it doesn't deserve it. I don't like how all the songs are very literal and the fact that the bands don't write them. And the fact that rednecks listen to it means it's just terrible. I try to stay away from redneck things.

This.

I've actually given contemporary country a try and just could not get into it. I'm a big fan of American roots, Bluegrass, classic country, and alt.country. But contemporary country leaves me cold.

What strikes me as odd about contemporary country is just how much country they've stripped out of it. You might get a little steel pedal and the voices sound southern, but it's almost mainstream pop. Except that mainstream pop morphed into a hip-hop somethingorother that I don't pay attention to, either.

When it was released, Shania Twain's "The Woman In Me" caught my interest...because of her music videos but I actually liked most of the CD. Most of Shania's other music wasn't as good I thought. I do like Faith Hill and I think Trisha Yearwood has a lovely voice...among a few other similar singers. I still listen to some of this type music today...not that I'd call myself a fan of this genre.

I'm with HipHopScribe and Uncle Erik. Contemporary country comes out of what Steve Earle calls "The Great Credibility Crisis" that Nashville went through in the 80s-90s, and it's not country.

If you want country, stick with artists (for the most part) like now-defunct Uncle Tupelo, Lucinda Williams, Son Volt, Jason Isbell, Gob Iron, Crooked Still, Be Good Tanyas, Alison Krauss (and her various band members) -- jeez, even Elvis Costello is way more country than contemporary country.

But I just listen to Townes, mostly.

Hayes Carll's not bad…there's some others…but I could never quite figure out what all the fuss was about Big & Rich.

Hayes Carll is great on recordings, not so much live -- he does a Dylan croon thing from note to note that drives me crazy. Oh, and how could I forget Avett Brothers and Todd Snider?

Yeah, don't get Big & Rich.

Least love on Head-fi? More like least love on the whole of the universe .

I agree with this.

I'm forced to listen to loud radio at work sometimes. It's either country or that terrible rap/club/pop music. I'd take the country any day but still can't stand most of it.

Earplugs are a godsend.

I have nothing against this genre, just not my cup of tea.

Living in College Station, TX for four years introduced me to more contemporary country than I care to recall.

I just think it sounds crummy. Like someone else said, there seems to be a complete lack of real emotion and creativity in the genre that makes it difficult to get into.
