I bought them from a head-fi'er used (read: mint) about $1340 cdn shipped from the states and I didn't have to pay duty/gst (I love Fedex). I'm working my way through your test cd right now and I have to say so far it's fantastic. I'm listening on my Phoenix/HD800 rig, next I'll have to listen to it on my HE60 setup.

I think Don's setup was the craziest of the bunch.
hahaha it could have gotten crazier still, but my friend couldn't pull it off on time -- he was supposed to send me some cryo'ed OCC (ohno continuous cast) cables & power cords fresh from the deep freezer.

i also really appreciated the opportunity to hear all the different gear, but one thing i missed (& i'm just as guilty) was the opportunity to hear some 'new' music. i think for next time, we should each bring music by 2 or 3 different artistes/groups whom we believe would not be readily encountered or likely listened to. i realize that we spend most time just trying out & enjoying the gear, but there's an opportunity to pick up on some new music here as well. my enjoyment of hardware has always led to some newfound musical tastes... just a thought (& i promise i won't bring any myron floren albums ).

Now that's a plan, I think the music can get lost in the gear. I think next meet we should bring our 'best rig' and use your idea for music.

Wow... that's literally a steal for those right now...especially when some countries can't even get their mitts on 'em no matter what money.

i have a few other demo cds that the group is welcome to (for next time).

In general, the meet was a good belief-breaking-and-forming experience for me. I got to hear for myself the sound everyone's been endorsing in the HD800 and HE60, I got to hear why the HD650 were the top dynamic headphones and how the 800 could supersede it so easily, and I had a chance to hear the difference that a high end source makes. But back to my original point, the recabling thing has me excited, and I will no doubt make that one of my first orders of business when my 650s come.
Hey joneeboi, I was quite shocked with the difference the cable made. But now I see why there is such a big market for the 580/600/650 cables.
They really bring the 650 to a whole new level! So all you Senn lovers, buy one from me, buy one from Cardas, or build one yourself. But the important thing is to do it! Or go even further and go balanced 650's, Devin I'd really like to A/B your balanced 650's to my recabled 650's. How's the SE output on your Phoenix?? Have you ever tried it? Or just go balanced and never look back

Absolutely ... cables can & do make a difference, but in a show environment it is sometimes difficult to discern exactly what is happening. i can literally guarantee that everyone should be able to discern the effect of my vdh ic's. in your system, it may or may not appeal to u, but there's no mistaking the difference. it may be more difficult to discern the difference of power cords & for any skeptics in our group, i would be willing to lend 1 or 2 of my red 'garden hoses' for a week or two.

on head-fi, there are also those who poo-poo the effects of burn-in, claiming it to be more of a mind-altering acclimatization. if u get new cables or get recabled phones, allow plenty of time for burn-in before making any decisions.

i think a lot of people, including this penguin, would be interested in recabling their phones, but are put off by the outrageous prices that are being asked for some of these 'tweaks' (not you, Robin, but some of the more notable members/supporters of head-fi are amongst them) OR are simply intimidated by the process. i'm all for allowing a reasonable profit, but $400 for a 650 recable? $1400+ for hd800 recable? milking the cash cow for all its worth, indeed (wasn't it w.c. fields who said 'a sucker and his money are soon parted' or words to that effect?). to cut my diatribe short, i'm all for your suggestion, robin. in fact, my 2nd proposition for the next mini-meet would be to help conduct a recabling demonstration. It shouldn't take more than 30 - 40 min. and i'll provide a set of phones & some raw cryo'ed occ cu cable (if i can get it). you can do the honours, robin ... if you're willing in fact, i'll provide 2 phones, so that someone else can have a go without fear of destroying their prized babies. is there any interest in this? what say U? (am i being too harsh on head-fi retailers?)

I agree with you 200% Don, when the price of a cable approaches or excedes the price of the headphone then something is definatially wrong!! That's one of the reasons I created my Senn cable, and it sounds great to me and to everyone I've gotten feedback from.

I would also be happy to do a recable demo at the next meet, I could make an HD650 cable and do a recable of a hardwired 'phone, my K601's are actually in need of a new cable

650s/600s are relatively easy since u don't have to go into the earpiece. but for many of the phones, the most difficult part may be just in removing the ear cushion, so i would propose the addition of a model that uses the 'not-so-stretchy' vinyl ring on the cushion -- like the jvc ha-rx700/900 or the at ath-ma50, t44, etc. i didn't look closely at the k601 cushions but are they mounted similar to the way grado bowls are?

Ding, ding, ... joneeboi... where r U?
proposed agenda for next meet:
1. share (new) music/artistes
2. recabling demo(s)

joneeboi ... i haven't looked at the pix i shot yet, but how can i fwd them to u for posting?

To recable the AKG's you have to remove the grills on the outside then do a bit of disassembly to get to the wires, then there's more to it if you convert them to dual entry. Each 'phone is going to be a little different and have it's own challenges I'm sure.

Perhaps a DIY head-fi meet??

In the time frame of a meet, cables or cmoys, maybe even joneeboi's amp or my amp could be built.

I think we're all on the same page here. Recabling should be handled DIY or I'm really sorry about your wallet! I can't wait for my markertek order to come so I can get to work. It's unreal what outfits are charging for cables that can be made for $20 or so.

Zzounds! sounds great to me ... what do the rest of you think? rw & i are hogging this 'discussion' & others input is surely welcome.
