Singlepower Tech/Repair Shop Thread

post #1 of 12

Based on comments from a few Singlepower owners, it looks like we should start a seperate thread to identify tech people or repair shops that could assist Singlepower owners in having their amps checked out and possible repaired. I will try to update this post to put all of the information up front here as we collect it. It would be helpful if people could provide the following information regarding techs that they think have the capability, and are willing, to work on SP amps:

1. The name of the person or company;
2. The city and state (or country if not USA);
3. The nature of the tech's business or experience that is relevant to the repair of an SP amp (e.g., repairs vacuum tube radios);
4. Whether you have personally used the tech's services to repair a SP amp or for other work; and
5. Any other information that is relevant (e.g., the nature of the repairs performed on our SP amp).

We can amend or supplement the list of information if other information is relevant or needed.

Let's also please try to keep this thread focused on the purpose for which it is created -- identification of tech people -- and please let's keep comments regarding other issues (including whether your particular amp needs repair, whether SP owners should have their amps repaired, whether Mikhail is evil, whether the Dodgers will win the pennant, etc.) to other threads. Thanks.

One of the people that has been mentioned in one of the other threads is Wayne Waananan at Bolder Cables - Store for The Bolder Cable Company. He is mentioned at the beginning of Tyson's thread. Perhaps Tyson or someone esle can fill in the relevant information regarding Wayne.

Feel free to make comments to make this thread more useful. No pride of authorship here. We just need to get something started, I think.

The List so far:

Store for The Bolder Cable Company Littleton, CO

http://www.brooksberdanltd.com/ Monrovia, CA (Charges $85/hour).

Yep, Wayne can evaluate the Singlepower amps, fix them, and/or do custom work on the amps for you.

His contact info (email, address, and phone) is located here:

Brook Berdan Ltd. in Monrovia, California will also fix SP amps. However, he charges $85/hour for service fee.

Bumping this up, since it was started on a Sunday and people may miss it.

^ It should if we could get more suggestions. I would think there would be a lot of people who could do the work, and I would think a lot of people on this forum would have some good suggestions at to some techs that might be able to do it. I'm surprised we've only received a couple of suggestions.

In the meantime, I've been in contact with Wayne at Bolder Cable, and I am going to send my SP Supra to him for an evaluation.

Great Tech Paul at Prodigital

Paul added a plate voltage transformer to my extreme--did a great job and was reasonably priced--with FAST turnaround. Pic is the plate voltage transformer that fits in the Extreme

Did you get your extreme repaired here? If so, what transformer did they replace the old one with?

I am trying to find tube amp techs in the Cincinnati area. The local musicians recommend a St. Louis shop listed above.

I have not used them. I have the Plitron transformer and as far as I know, the transformer issue is with the standard Extreme Hammond units being underspec'ed.

Just an update on my Supra repair experience, which I also posted in the Singlepower "hand grenade" thread. I had Wayne at Bolder Cable re-work a few things to make myamp safe. After the repairs, the amp still sounds great. Actually, it sounds a little better than it did before, and I was very pleased with the sound of the stock unit. With Wayne's modifications, it has a little more punch and a little more bass.

I really wanted to save this amp, and am really glad that I had it "made safe." I was worried a bit about whether the sound would materially change from what I had enjoyed previously, but, as I said, the only changes are for the better. I would not hesitate to recommend Wayne if you're considering having your SP amp fixed.

I would just note that Wayne's turnaround time has become quite long. I sent him my amp a month ago and he hasn't had time to diagnose it yet because he has so many other Singlepower amps in the queue for repair. He saiid it would be another 4 to 5 weeks before he would be able to repair my amp. Just a word of warning if you don't have a back-up amp to use in the interim...you might want to send your amp to one of the other techs listed on this thread.

Paul did a marvelous job sourcing and installing the second transformer for the plate voltage on my Extreme. His turnaround time is super (for me locally, it is two days--amazing). the quality of his work is apparent in the pic. He will not advise boutique parts, only spec. out what needs to be done, give a fair quote and stand by his work. For digital is is a Zen master, and a tech's tech for all else. I could not be more pleased.
