I searched through the forum and I saw a few other people asked about this but there was never an answer. I just sat down and did this in the last half hour for myself and it worked out very well.
When you cut the cable at the stock trs plug, it looks very similar to the D7000 cable pictures I've seen on this website. Inside is a sheet of paper like material and then the 2 actual cables from the right and left drivers. Each is its own cable+sleeving inside the big cable lol. You have to be really careful when stripping the wires because they are pretty small (I had to use scissors). The right channels cable has red and black wires, red is the + and black is -. Left channel is white and black. White is + and black is -. I just put the headphones on and listened for static in a channel while measuring resistance across white/black to make sure the red was for the right channel.
I also had to put some black electrical tape around the outer sleeving to get it through the 4 pin xlr connector backing/strain relief. The sleeving is kind of woven together. Once you cut it and start messing with the inner wires, it starts unraveling around the end and its a pain to deal with. The tape seemed to work fine. I didn't take any pictures, I just wanted to get it done. I will look up the Denon D7000 cable pic later and post it in here.
My impressions... I don't know if this is from the balanced amp being better or driving balanced. Single ended I used a shanling ph100 and now I use the Firstwatt F1. When I listened to the DX1000 yesterday, it missed the high end extension/sparkle that my K1000 has. Snare drums and cymbals just sounded flat. If you have ever hit/been next to a snare drum being hit, the K1000 makes it sound like the drum head was tight and the DX1000 made it sound like the drum head was very loose. Cymbals just didn't have the shimmer and sparkle to them.
After balancing, the bass seems to have slightly dropped(very slightly) it could be the bass is just controlled to infinite and beyond . The upper end snare/cymbals have some life to them now. Shakers/cymbals/snare sound much better. The sax in Smooth Operator just didn't sound right yesterday either and now I think it sounds great. It has more oomph behind it and doesn't seem to get drowned out by the bass like before.
I just got these yesterday afternoon and listened for a few hours (2ish) + about 3 hours when I got home in the morning. I don't know them like the back of my hand or anything but I can definitely tell the top end is better now. Hopefully the 1-2 other people that have reterm'd the stock cable will chime in so we know if its the better amp or the balancing doing this.
Anyways I am extremely happy with them balanced out of the F1. Yesterday I thought they would be getting sold pretty quick because I preferred the K1000 hands down. Today running balanced, I feel they are a perfect compromise between a fun bass-head can and a ref such as the K1000.
