Sony Walkman a729 vs s639?

Hi, recently I bought a Sony a816 (4gb) and although it's a really nice sounding player I made a big mistake only buying it in 4gb size I think - at the price of almost £45 too

After going back and looking around I found out that I could instead buy either the a729 (16gb without bluetooth) or s639 (16gb) both brand new for between £60-70.

So seeing as it made sense to upgrade (and not being able to afford the x series model) that's what I will be doing. I've spend about 5 days or so now finding as much info out as possible between the 2 but still never really gained a real answer as to how they both compare in terms of sound.

What I did find out was -

the a816 has the most hiss there is
the a729 has less hiss than the a816 but still hiss
the s639 has the least hiss (very minimal but still there)

the a729 has the exact same features as the a816 (very minimal) but now has a 2.4 inch screen instead of 2 inch

the s639 has a 2 inch screen but is (besides the x series) the most feature rich walkman yet - with customizeable themes, senseme feature, radio etc

In terms of sound quality people seem to generally be saying the a729 sounds warm with a large soundstage and full sounding bass

And the s639 sounds not as warm, with less soundstage and a heavy powerful bass - not as full in sound but just louder/stronger. It also has clearer high end sound, which some people said can be too loud and somewhat harsh.

Is that above ^ at all accurate?

I'm using sennheiser cx500 IEM's (not great but not terrible) and will in the future be buying something better - but not be spending over £100 for IEM's (probably be buying something like sennheiser ie6 or ie7. Which would be the better player to pick for these sort of earphones? they provide quite a lot of bass I think.

Having a radio doesn't mean much to me as I wont really use it ever anyway, but with a 2.4 inch screen the bigger and easier it is to see the better I guess.

One feature that makes the a729 seem more appealing to me is that you can access the "secret" service menu to further alter the treble and bass gain, this could make it sound better than the s639 maybe (which doesn't have the service menu)

When these 2 players were released the A series was like sony's high end range, S was medium and E was low - which is why I would have thought the A would sound the best (until the X series came along and replaced A as the new best sounding player) which is why It's confusing some people say the s639 sounds so much better than the a729.

So yeah, any help would be great thanks -

Current earphones I will be using with the player I buy for quite a while are sennheiser cx500's and the main genres of music are rock, pop, metal and dance.

SQ matters more than the features the player offers

Thanks

I have both!

Hi,
I have both the A729 and s638, and I prefer the sound of A729...Its has a larger sound-stage, clearer sound and clean instrumental separation. Plus as you already know you can change the bass and treble in the service menu, which you cannot in the s638.

The sound of S638 is more dynamic, but abit bassy though..

Thanks ^

By changing the bass and treble in the service menu on the a729 is it possible to make it sound more dynamic and bassy or even equal to the s639?

Or is that something (having more bass and being more dynamic) that the s639 just has and the a729 doesn't with no way to add/recreate yourself

I found that you can't make the a729 sound as dynamic as S638 /639 even by changing the bass and treble settings..
If I had not bought the S729 first and had the s638 first, I'd probably would have been very satisfied with the SQ of the S638.
Since the s638 has more features such as radio, sense me, ect
Its a matter of preference and what type of music you listen to as well.
I prefer clarity and larger sound stage as oppposed to dynamic sound..

Washed my A729 (grrrr - second walkman I've washed over the last few years) so I just ordered an s639 (I like the smaller size and the radio, and also the A729 seems to be tough to find these days).

Some have said here that the S639 has raised bass and treble compared to the A729, so I'm asking the reverse of the question above: Using the eq, can you reduce these frequencies to get a more flat sound out of the S639? (I noticed that someone said the bass was "overbearing" on the S639 - I wasn't expecting this since others have mentioned how good it sounds).

I have PL-50s which don't have a ton of bass so the increased bass may actually be a good thing, but just wondering if the bass is very prominent on the S639 even if you try to tame it with the eq.

(Also, I seem to recall that not long ago the S639 was tough to find, now they suddenly seem to be everywhere online - anyone know why that would be?)

Um I would buy neither... the Sony A840 series will be available next month, and it will probably be better than both options...

If you can still return your A729 I would do that. The A840 has the X series' digital amp...

The A840 series is not going to be available in the US, and I believe I've read on here that it's only going to be available in the 16gb version in Europe. I have been keeping tabs on that player since it was first announced for Japan. When/if I can get the 32gb (or 64gb) for a reasonable price it will be my next player. For now, I'll probably make do with the 16gb S639 I just snagged for $85.

A few weeks ago Sony was selling, probably their last stock of, S639 from their website for around $65-70 incl. shipping. This is most likely why you now can buy them on Ebay for around $90-100.

Just got the S639, and compared to my A729 (which I unfortunately can't compare it to directly since I washed it, thus forcing me to get the new S639) I found the EQ to need more tweaking to sound 'right' (listening with PL-50s, which are quite neutral). Definitely need to lower the .4 kHz a bit, for instance, and I ended up bumping the midrange slider a notch too. This may have something to do with not being able to go into the set-up area and adjust the sound like you could with the A729 (I'm taking people's word for that on here, haven't tried it myself).

For other S639 owners, what EQ settings are you using (and with what headphones)?
