Was wondering who you would pick?

Edit: I forgot Woody Shaw

Ooh---this is a tough one. I picked Wynton Marsalis because he's the one who's recordings I go to at the drop of a hat. His "Standard Time" album was a really good example of both his technical brilliance and his sheer creativity. I listen to Miles, too.

I've been fortunate to have seen live performances by both Wynton and Dizzy (both at the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival). I was just a young college kid at the time, and in both cases was spellbound.

I went with Brownie......as I was making the list it became apparent that trumpeters in jazz, specifically Bop trumpeters had their lives come to very tragic ends..... Fats Navarro, Clifford Brown, Lee Morgan, Booker Little, Woody Shaw was only in his early 40s.......add Bix to the lsit too though he wasn't a bop musician.....very sad to think so many of them died in their prime and so young.

I really like Miles, and think he is excellent composer and leader, but sheer trumpeting skills I voted for Clifford Brown.

Yeah - shame Chet Baker isn't on the list, but personally think Clifford Brown is more versatile.

To me it's not a contest and I have no favorites. They all have different styles and I very much enjoy listening to them all. And as Erik pointed out, there are some important trumpeters David missed (bound to happen with only 10 choices). Who do I listen to the most? Miles Davis, Harry "Sweets" Edison, Freddie Hubbard, Lee Morgan, Chet Baker, and Roy Eldridge. But I wouldn't necessarily call them my favorites. I just love their music.

Clifford Brown was arguably the greatest technical virtuoso on the trumpet. His early death was a tragic loss for jazz. I listen to his music frequently, but because he died so young he did not leave a voluminous recorded legacy.

Chet Baker - The Chopin of Jazz. The musical equivalent of stepping into liquid.

Clifford Brown, Freddie Hubbard and Miles (for sheer passion) top my list. Tom Harrel too. And all of the above, except that Wynton's 'tude still bugs me (I acknowledge his musicianship).

Miles better than Armstrong and Marsalis? Oh well.
Best ever? Armstrong. Recordings are old though and sound quality is so so.
Current favorites? Maurice Andre and Winton Marsalis.
Andre recorded several classical music pieces with a jazz flavor, including Trompettissimo, one of my favorites since my teen years.

I'm certainly not saying that he ranks with the musical icons given in the poll, but I saw Chris Botti open for Sting once and he was pretty good!

no love for Donald Byrd, Clark Terry or Terence Blanchard?

Roy Eldridge
