Just got free speakers! I need a receiver now...

Thread Starter
I just stumbled upon a FREE pair of Definitive Technology BP-10s, and a 12" Definitive Technology Subwoofer(not sure about the model number). My neighbor was getting rid of them, and I was glad to take them off of her hands free of charge.

Any thoughts/opinions on these speakers?

I am looking to purchase a new receiver to power these speakers. I am considering these for their relatively high power output, feature set, and reasonable price(all under $400).

-Denon DRA-397
-Onkyo TX-8555
-Yamaha RX-797

Any input appreciated.

I heard this brand a couple of weeks ago at Bestbuy, though not all of their stores carry them. They were okay, good sound but not too detailed. Considering they are free, you cant go wrong. With a decent sub they should be pretty sufficient for the moment. Try getting at a 5.1 receiver so you can expand them to a HT setup if needed.

$750-$1000 price. No way allow speakers given away. Must have gotten divorced. Plus probably another $1K for the sub.

I'd look for a good, used receiver at Audiogon. You should be able to find something from NAD, Rotel, Rega, Naim, Creek, or others in your price range. Most receivers are stable, long term components. Getting 20+ years from one shouldn't be a problem. Don't be afraid of buying used, either. Most audiophile kit is babied then sold to pave the way for upgrades.

Agree with Uncle Erik on the buying something used. You can get much more for your money that way. Don't where you live, but if there is a pretty good amount of pawnshops check them out. I have some friends who own shops and you would not believe some of the stuff they get.
