Copying music from iPod

Is there a way to copy from an iPod to a local/portable drive while maintaing all the info (album/artist etc., they're called tags, aren't they?)

I've been ripping my entire collection into apple lossless to update my library which used to consist of mostly mp3 files of different bitrates. After copying to my 5.5 g Video, I deleted the music files on my laptop to save space. Now that I've got a portable HDD, I want to use it to backup my new library.

However my experience with MediaMonkey (v3.0.6.1190) was a failure. I selected all the files on my iPod, clicked "send to folder (copy)" and they were shown to be sent to my portable drive in a few seconds (it can't be that quick can it?), but in fact no files were copied to the new destination.

Is there a way to do this at all?

There are many programs which can do this, but you don't really need them. Just follow these steps: Copy or Transfer Music and Songs from iPod to PC and Computer without iTunes » My Digital Life

If you want to rename and reorganise the files later, a program like foobar can do it.

Why?
There is no gain in this, only using more space for saving?
And with MP3 there is usually no problem with tags, but I know with wav-files tags is not transferred, not sure about Apple Lossless.
I'm ripping lossless from CDs. I find wav doesn't work well with tags, and I had difficulty modifying album art. That's exactly why I went to Apple Lossless.

How does this work with your tags, and Apple lossless?
No, I have not tested this or any other 3rd party programme. I simply found the ipod_control>music folder, changed the attribute from invisible to normal, and added it to iTunes, and my computer took care of the rest. (I set the iTunes Music folder to a portable location and the folder organised)

Result is quite magical. All album info inc album art is correct except for Andrea Bocelli's Sacred Arias which I ripped as wav. The folder and file names of the Apple Lossless rips are well-behaved too.
