Advice on a DAC with USB/FW input and 4 TRS outputs.

Hey guys,

Been lurking around here for quite some time - figured now was a good time to jump in.

So I went hunting through the uber DAC thread but was hoping for a bit of advice anyway.

Basically all I'm looking for is a good quality DAC that can output from my PC to my 2 subs and 2 monitors (Fostex PM2-Mk II and PM-0.5 Mk II). They can take XLR or TRS inputs.

There are so many options I just have no idea. Price isn't too much of an issue.

Yeah I've been looking at the M-Audio Profire 610/2626 and some of the Motu and Presonus gear.

They are recording stations however, and just wanted to know if there were DACs around that could just do the output..

Edit: The Konnekt 8 seems to do what i want. Cheaper than the Profire 610 too. Has anyone used either of these before?

So this is quite an old thread and as you would have it, I'm looking to see what new options out there.. (my previous interface has died as the result of an accident)

 

Again, looking for a DAC (don't need recording input capabilities) that has:

 

  • 4 x 1/4" TRS outputs
  • USB (though I am still willing to look at FireWire if that is all that is available)
  • Can run as a standalone unit

 

Willing to pay anywhere up to $500.

 

I've seen the TC Electronic Impact Twin II and the Focusrite Scarlett 8i6 as possible options, but both are recording interfaces and I'm having a damn hard time finding just a DAC with those TRS outputs (and a USB input)..

 

Any suggestions?

This would be a very new field for me to jump in to (DIY audio), but I'm more than willing.

 

Would you be able to provide some quick notes/point me to something to kick me off? I honestly do not know the first place to start.

 

(Anyone else, feel free to list any other recomendations)

Also, could you use something like this:

.. and go from the RCA outputs to my 1/4" TRS inputs on my speakers using something like this:

http://www.proaudiosolutions.com/product-p/trs-203.htm

Would that provide the same level of output? Or would the cables loose some power? IE, do RCA provide less power than TRS?

Basically you just need to find a case to hold the already assembled board. You can even put it in a plastic board folder, punch some holes and use it straight away

 

You can find all the documentation at the lower half of the webpage. If you click in to the Digikey link (http://search.digikey.com/us/en/products/XR-USB-AUDIO-2.0-MC/880-1027-ND/2344903) you will find it comes with everything you need.

 

The advantage of this board is it has one of the best asyn USB audio interface, and the TRS outputs are line output which are perfect for your powered speakers.

 

I have purchased the 2-ch version of the reference board and plan to use it as a USB transport.
