Sound great to me. His brother D50 is legend

Hi-rez and digital out... I wonder if this would also make for a nice DAP. I've been on the fence over replacing my iPod. This and the Korg look like they might make good substitutes.

If it has the SPDIF out, then, it will be an EXCELLENT DAP , Can use both SD and Memory Stick... good storage. USD 399, very tempting price too...

Still nothing compared to what Marantz produce I'm afraid.

you never know if the amp section, output section, etc., is even good for portable use. i doubt sony focus on that for a professional recorder as its primary use will be storage, recording and then transferring via usb or sd card to a computer.

i would imagine that their best sounding player is and will remain, the x series.

I don't care much about the line out or hp out quality. I am more interested in SPDIF out, because, I can pair it to any DAC or digital amp that I have. And the PCM-M10 is the cheapest and smallest PCM recoder from Sony.

Thank you.

the big omission

The glaring omission on these recorders is digital IN, not out. With no XLR jacks, we have no way of getting signals from high-quality mics into this thing; there are portable external A/D converters for mics, but these recorders can't take 'em. So you're stuck with a lame 1/8" jack and the undoubtedly less-than-stellar built-in A/D converters.

Leaving XLRs off for space savings is forgivable (although the crummy MicroTrack manages to fit 1/4" TRS connectors in a puny device), but it kinda ruins a field recorder if you can't get decent mic signals into it.

If the PCM-M10 is anything like the PCM-D50, it will have excellent A/D.

It's still not impossible to get XLR into it, but point taken.

I hope this won't be counted as a thread derail, but Alessis have an audio interface called the Protrack which turns the feeble iPod into a do-it-all field recorder with mics, balanced inputs Alesis Protrack. While, I'd prefer to have a sony recorder, this one at least lets me use an iPod as a player and field recorder. I may order one in the new year after selling a headphone!

True the PCM D50 is one of the best players I've heard with a very powerful output.

Thanks for the link bakhtiar. It is interesting. The Protrack however, sports balanced input from TRS or XLR as well as mics, and houses the storage unit (iPod) inside a protective case. For recording lectures or simple voice stuff, the LogiTech tool might work (and be interesting for interviews), but for proper recording, the Protrack is probably the best there is for the iPod group. Still, I would prefer a nicely made Sony with pre-record buffers etc.

I started in taperssection before going to hydrogenaudio and finally, here!
