Comedy speaker stands

After searching for desktop speaker stands for almost 3 months...I've gotten these, which are quite hilarious to look at. Although I did try to make my own by following the advice in this thread, the woodworkers shop close to me said it would cost about $150 for what I wanted to do, and I don't have any powertools/experience to do this kind of stuff at home.

So I went to Ikea, and after hopelessly moping around for an hour or two, I bought these kitchen utensils.

They are meant to hold kitchen stuff, but I've adopted them to a different use. I'm sure these resonate/vibrate pretty badly, as well as being very slippery and generally unsafe, but I've noticed that my Epos ELS3's are very muddy anyway (I'm probably positioning them too close to the wall, and should've gotten something front-ported like Usher S520s). I can say that, after having them at desk level for almost a year, raising the tweeters to ear level really makes a great difference.

is the base of the speaker touching the bare metal of the stand or is there a rubber or other non skid surface ring bw the two?

Is this stable enough?maybe if you touch the speakers by mistake they will fall down.

They will work good if you do not turn on your Hi/Fi!........ Hurry, get back to the woodshop and make tops and bottoms out of 4"X4" wood blocks. Fill the inside with foam. Cost $40.00

ELS3's are not the most dynamic speakers, but they are definitely not muddy. You do have them too close to the back wall. They're also too close together and the stands (and I use the term loosely) aren't helping much. Used the same way, the Ushers wouldn't be much better. Neither are designed to be desktop speakers. They're meant to be on proper stands at least 18" from the back wall and at least 6' apart.
I'd hazard a guess that PSB Alphas, which are not as good as the ELS3's or Usher's, would sound better in your situation.

There is a picture in the Cd rom section of the Walter/Wendy Carlos remaster for Sonic Seasonings which shows his recording studio. His monitors were suspended by wires. OK, go to the sports equipment store buy a roll of fishing line. Go to the Hardware store get little screw eyelets. Place four on top of each speaker. Place four into ceiling above each speaker. Cost........$ 2.99. Sonic Seasonings in Quad
