CF Mod to iHP120 need help.

well i just finish installing the CF card and a new battery, I put the rockbox files on the cf, and need to turn it on and update it. However i am getting a error saying "ATA error: -80" looked around and im suppose to reset it? Can anyone tell me what I have to do at this point. Also the charge indicator is flashing however when I unplug the charger I cannot turn the Player on. (Im not sure if this is a problem or if its just b/c its a new battery and needs time to charge up to a point before I can turn the player on). Any advice for either of these issues is greatly appreciated.

an update: I swapped back out the CF to the HDD and it is able to boot up rockbox no problem and there is no ata error: -80 message, however if i disconnect the adapter the player turns off and i cant turn it back on. (Also it now also says low battery when i turn it back on with the adapter attached).

Make sure your CF card is actually compatible. There are a few CF cards that aren't compatible and that seems to be the case. And you might want to check the battery plug again, could be loose or the battery itself could be a dud. Make sure the polarity of the plug is correct.

This is a pic of the CF adapter and the CF memory i am using. The adapter i got from DX and was one that was recommended for the mod. The CF is a generic one i got off of eBay.

Also what do you mean by polarity? Im not very good with this sort of thing, anyway if you mean the black and red wire that attaches to the board very specific that it can only be plugged in one way?

Did you plug the cf card into a computer and check to see whether its fat32 formatted?

Some people bought iPod batteries for their H1xx, but in their case, negative had to be positive, positive to negative. The adapter is different to the one I used, as mine had a jumper setting on it, and it didn't work without that jumper on, but I don't know.

I checked my CF card and it is in fat32. Also the adapter does have a "jumper" how would i go about Turing it on or off?

Also the battery did seem to have the wires reversed as a plugged it in I noticed that the order was reversed. However i didnt think that was going to be a problem since i got it from and it claimed it was for the H120. If this is the case what can i do about the battery?

When you inserted the adapter to the iHP120, are the pins aligned properly?

yes, I did have to shave off some plastic so the adapter would fit all the way.

Since you used that battery, it should just plug in normally, but you were supposed to look at the polarity of the original battery and remember it before you put it in. I don't have my H1xx anymore so I can't tell you which is the correct way. Also, for the jumper, having the jumper on the two pins = on, taking the jumper off = off. You need to have the jumper connected, because there are a few people who have had problems because their jumpers fell off.

The unused pins of the adapter should be on the left side. Make sure that the jumper is properly seated and making contacts. I had to bend the two pins forward 90 degrees to make it fit.

*sigh* it's not the adapter.

Go back and read the rockbox wiki again. You need a newer bootloader. You'll need to install the hard drive to install the bootloader.

CFModGuide < Main < TWiki


Follow the instructions. Carefully.

I'm using a 32gb SDHC and I did not updated the bootloader. Perhaps on CF cards its required?

How are you using an SDHC card in an H120?

The "ata error: -80" is a known issue with the old bootloader with at least many CF cards, and with going from even the new bootloader usb mode to rockbox.

If it turns out that this is just the bootloader usb mode, reset it by inserting a thin object through the hole in the bottom, of course.
