Electrostatic Headphone Amplifiers - Page 4

A high end stat amp goes well into speaker territory. There's only a tiny market for them, going by what I've heard about sales of existing models. I don't think Stax are interested in sending themselves bust yet again trying. Kevin Gilmore estimated (and I hope he doesn't mind me quoting him) the cost of a T2 made today would be $15,000-$20,000. Who is going to pay that for just an amp to listen to headphones with?

But the ARE making SOME amps which are not so much cheaper than some of the best amps discussed here. If they're not interested to make a high end amplification for their flagship model they would'n compromise themselves with bad amps which are in this price range. They just should disconitnue the production (most of the headphone manufactors do not make amplifiers). Moreover I'm sure that making a good amp will be far more advantageous to Stax than to Headamp/Woo audio/RSA/...

Summary: They want to make amps and they do it. Obviously it's not a matter of financial interest.

the reason most headphone manufacturers dont make amps is because they dont care if you drive their headphones properly.
you can run dynamic headphones out of any source equipped with a headphone jack, it wont always sound good, but most people wont notice the difference anyway. you cant do this with stats, as they cant be run out of an ipod or computer without some kind of adapter or amp, so if stax didnt make their own amps, people wouldnt be buying their headphones.

as for stax amps costing almost as much as the non stax amps.
those amps are small scale productions sold directly by the manufacturers without any markup, which doesnt require various dealers making a profit, or huge quantities of worldwide warranty service.

If you didn't know that aftermarket amps existed, and bought a top-end Stax rig with O2s, you'd just consider them to sound a bit dark. You'd have no idea that it was possible to get an amp that makes them sound considerably better/different. As bjarnetv pointed out, most people don't know any better.

It should also be added that I'd say most people on Head-fi who buy Stax buy second-hand, where the cost of an O2/717 rig is under $2000. That's considerably less than a new O2A/727 rig, which puts the cost of Woo, Headamp and other 'stat amps in perspective.
