What's the source? If computer, then I can highly recommend trying to snag used 2Move or 3Move from the For Sale forum. I got my 3Move for about $210, I think, and it pair very well with my 600s.

well in that case you definietly want a DAC/AMP rather than just an amp. most computers has\ve noisy and downright average outputs. the ibasso D10 would be perfect, but is $270 you could also look into the compass

The dac/amp will use a usb connection to your computer so it will bypass your soundcard. and to answer your first question a dac/amp is a dac(digital to analog converter) and amplifier in one unit. All your music on your computer is in a digital format so it uses a dac(either on your soundcard or seperate) to convert that to an audible analog signal to your headphones.

I'd recommend a decent sound card (EMU 0404 PCI - $50 off eBay) and a used DIY amp off the forum - you MIGHT be able to snag a CKK-III if you're lucky at about $175.

I'm a noob here as well. What improves with having a better DAC/AMP? As far as I've read (not very much), different amps can provide an increase in the quality of the sound if matched right. I don't know about DACs though.
