Ultrasone HFI 780 vs. PRO 750.. what are the differences?

Hi all,

I've read about both headphones with a lot of curiosity, now I want to purchase either the HFI or PRO. All the information I've gathered is very fragmented across the forum and I can't really get a decent picture of how they compare hence this thread (sorry if one already exists, found none with search) and my asking for your help.

One piece of information I've come across is that the 750 pro is hyper-analytical and that it'll reveal a bad source easily, I'm a bit worried about that since I listen almost exclusively to mp3s ranging from 128kbps to 256kbps with 160kbps making up a majority all coming from an Asus Xonar STX. However I'm hoping that's not true as I've read it has a tighter and more detailed low end than the other models, I also like the idea that it's velvet and that it comes with 2 cables I can switch to suit my needs.

Another thing I'm curious about is presentation and soundstage etc.. for music I don't think care much either way, but what about movies and games? Will there be major differences between the two models?

Thanks, I'm really excited and looking forward to getting one of these on my noggin already

I haven´t heard the 780 so can´t help you with any comparisone. But you can definiatly hear the low bit rate on the 750. There is certainly headphones that do low quality recordings better if you don´t like to listen to the failings and such. Maybe the Proline 650 which are said to be more forgiving, a bit cheaper. Good bass even if it doesn´t go as low or is quite as detailed as the 750?

As for cables I exclusively use the straight cable. I don´t really see a use for the coiled but then I am not walking around with it

Well, I'm not so sure about the 650, some people like them over the 750 others not so much, some say the midbass on those is sucked out which can't be good with DnB or other electronica.

Maybe I should just give the HFI780 a shot and stop contemplating, it sounds like the bass may be too boomy but some don't have a problem with them, I'm wondering if this is the case for me.. maybe I can just EQ the lows to suit my taste which is what I've needed to do with every crappy headphone/earphone so far anyway. The "out of control" bass may be a bit fun for playing games or watching movies though.

I really thought the pro 750 would be for me, as far as sound signature it seems to be right and comfort should be a good deal better but yeah my source is not CD quality and it never will be due to convenience issues and rarity of a lot of my favorite tracks.

I guess its time to roll the dice..
