The Northstar is a very musical DAC, offering a slightly warm tonal balance but not at the expense of detail. I prefer it by a wide margin to the Benchmark and Lavry DACs I demo'd, which sound bright by comparison (at least to my ears.)
This is an Mk1 version, not the Mk2. The Mk1 allows the user to turn off the upsampling function at the press of a button, while the Mk2 does not allow upsampling to be defeated. Well-recorded digital music sounds much better with upsampling switched off to my ears, so it is a nice option to be able to listen without upsampling.
Specifications:
Digital Inputs (Selectable from front of unit):
Coax SPDIF
Toslink SPDIF
AES/EBU
I2S
Analog Outputs: RCA
Dimensions: 17.5" x 7.5" x 2" (W x D x H)
Weight: 12 lbs.
