It has been mentioned that the outer shell will be soft material in the final production, so you'll get more flexible fit.

ridiculous temptation.

since we do not know the pricing yet, will TS, Tai and others like to suggest price points at which this will be justifiable or pricings at which this will be a bargain?

Poor student needs to save up beforehand. =(

Also to TS: maybe if u have some spare time you could listen from a few genres and tell us what genres sound best? or at least some sound signature impressions? is it similar to anything else you've heard in terms of signature? This is also to prevent FOTM thingy u know...

Will be much appreciated!

At last! For IEM's the slightly open design can be beneficial for those who are prone to employ them at work or in the library and are subject to being bugged by those who don't realize that listening to music has a higher priority than doing mere work.

I'm glad Head Direct put out the word on these before CanJam before I pulled the trigger on the RE0. So now they have a new high end IEM, an audiophile-quality DAP, and some interesting amps. What's next?

So do these use filters like the rest of the RE line?

Yes, they use those very filters, that I can see.

Just as an additional bit of information: I have measured the impedance of the RE3 and the multimeter says 16 Ohm.

Nice review antonyfirst thanks. Sounds interesting. Where would you place the RE3 in your headphones ranking in your profile ? Which ones are the most balanced between RE0 and RE3 ?

I'd place them anywhere in the upper half of "Tier 3": most are on par and the rankings are so fluid that change based on my mood towards the different flavours.

As to balancement, the RE3 have more extension in the lows than the RE0. The RE0 are a bit light in the mids while the RE3 are noticeably stronger.

Great review, thanks. I'll try to get my hands on RE0 soon so I could imagine the RE3's sound

Mailman just dropped off a pair of RE3s for review, but I think they are the actual production models, because the tip thingie you see on Tony's photos are soft rubber, not hard plastic. I immediately put on a pair of Sony hybrid large tips (my hands-down favorite single flange silcone sleeve), stuck them in (very comfy for my ears) and turned on the Sony A818 (it was the closet DAP to my desk). Wow, for out of the box, they sound very nice. I was slightly surprised, to be honest, because of no burn-in at all.

Of course, I am going to let them burn-in for at least 15-20 hours, since Tony suggested that is the level where he felt they started to stabilize. But the Holly Cole song that came on, Too Darn Hot, sounded as good as I have heard it.

Again, this is all too premature. I look forward to comparing them to my Westone 3s and X10s once the RE3s are burned in.

Tony, what does that ranking mean? Just curious. Does that mean you rank them up near the top. I have nowhere near the experience that you do, though I have owned three "top tier" phones, the Westones, the IE8s and the X10s (though some would say the X10s are not top tier, I think they are).

Anyway, I will deliver a review at some point, though I don't have the chops Tony does when it comes to describing sound. My review will be more for the everyman, not the audiophile.

Update: I had them on for about a half hour, and did get some discomfort in the upper part of my ear where that little extension arm is located (north in the ear). I hope that little annoyance will not be a problem long term, because I have a feeling these phones are going to be an excellent canalphone otherwise.

Hey Tom,

I tend to rank (or rather "order") the headphones I have heard dividing them in "tiers". You can see that in my profile, but it's not the most stable ranking ever since I often rearrange things based on mood, although the arrangements are usually within the same tier.
Tier 3 hosts stuff like Image X10, Apuresound ER4S, Yuin PK1, OK1, Audio Technica ESW9 and such.
That kind of rankings is something I saw from kramer 2-3 years ago and found it very useful when I didn't have any experience, thus I started keeping something similar in my profile to be useful for others who could share similar music taste to mine.

As to the canalphone: mine is rubber and moderately flexible, but Fang says the final shell will be softer to improve comfort and ease of fit.

What tips are you most comfortable with?

I can see people having fit issues with these.

Anyway, looks interesting. Thanks for the review!

Tony, I am a Sony hybrid devotee for any canalphones. I like the fit and the SQ they deliver.

As for fit issues, I didn't mean to say there would be fit issues for most people, and it seems I have the preproduction model as well. I am going to spend the better part of the afternoon with them in my ears, to see how that goes. When they are in my ears, nothing but comfort. It was when I removed them at first, I noticed it. But the SQ, even ear, is excellent, as Tony noted too. So I think this needs a longer term wear before jumping to fit conclusions.

Now I know I have to get these.
