I tried the Beats By Dre...And I liked them! - Page 3

For $350 you really need to put the Beats into perspective. There are many other headphones - new and used - that you can get for less that are much better. I have heard the Beats many times and remain unimpressed. Active noise cancellation is not good for music. It takes away what you don't want to hear and it also takes away what you do want to hear. A Sennheiser HD-650 won't do that. The HD-650 has also been picked over by lots of audio geeks and judged (for the most part) an excellent headphone. The cost of amping is also overblown. A vintage/used receiver will give you sufficient power. You might already have one. You might find one left out for trash collection or at a thrift store for $20. A PreSonus HP4 for $100 will also do the job.

If you put the Beats into the context of other headphones on the market, they're a poor value.

I guess it's my bad then.

Exactly, my brother owns the Dre headphones (He's not a member here as he's only 15) and he is more than happy with them. However for the price, he could have bought something that sounds just as good if not better. But then again he wouldn't have been with the in-crowd so I guess its a trade off.

I tried the headphones and thought they weren't that bad, much better than the majority of the mass market headphones out there.

I agree. Dre Beats are about status and aesthetics. They are better than mass market headphones, but unfortunately they don't run at a mass market price.

When comparing these phones, a lot of people bash them because of Monster. Being an Engadget junkie myself I see tons of crap that Monster tries to pull, and I can agree that they as a company are less than reputable. Unfortunately that does not mean that they cannot make a quality product. We head-fi'ers should be listening with an analytic ear, regardless of who makes the product. If skullcandy produced IEM's that topped UE 11's, I'd probaby buy them.

I think the worst part of the thread is that the OP has asked for advice on purchasing these or not. You said you liked them, and if you have the money to spend on them, then by all means don't let any of us stop you

Yeah, not every company is lucky enough to have an aggressive legal department that can fund research and development....

Hey man, money is money. At least they are spending part of their 90%+ profit margins on something other than themselves :P

Yeah, I am pretty callous when it comes to the issues of ethical business practice, but the whole Monster Mini Golf, Monster Energy Drinks, Monster.com, etc. etc. etc. thing was so disgraceful to me. I just wish somebody with secret deep pockets would provoke Monster Cable into a big enough lawsuit to bring the whole company down. Noel Lee should be delivering pizzas.

Sony MDR-XB700, or a pair of Denon D5000s, or... ****, pretty much anything else. They rattle when you walk, and they need a battery. Just don't.

What's that supposed to mean? I'm 15 Had: Plantronics gaming headphones (epic fail), ATH-AD700, Grado SR-225, Ultimate Ears Metro Fi 100, Westone UM3X and now ALO-780. Lost the Metro Fi and sold my SR-225 for some stupid reason.

Ive heard the beats, they are about $200 overpriced and the sound is very colored. The 595s with the bithead will give you better sound overall. The Beats can be fun, but for me the fun did not last more than five minutes. Then I missed the balanced details and overall soundstage of my senns. If you value punch more than true~to~source quality, maybe they would be nice for you...but they still cost about $200 more than they are worth.

If you like them, enjoy them and think the price tag is fair, then buy them.

I listened to the Beats at best buy, and they do seem to have the loudest bass out of any headphone I've heard (much more so than my DT770s). While I do not believe they are worth $300, you may value high bass output more than me, so I can't really tell you what they should be worth to you. Only you can determine that. But if you're worried about the cost, I would at least check out some of the other suggestions that people have made here, especially when you're in that price range.
