Sound quality on Laptop to beat Audiophile 2496 - spec me a USB DAC?

Dear Head-fi-ers,

As the time to travel to Uni approaches, the idea of getting a laptop has been looming for some time. However, recently I've been offered an internship placement that will involve living in uni accomodation for a long period of time, so I thought it was time to get my head down and get some ideas together for some portable tech.

Thing is, I'm a bit of a music/movie junky. As such, I'm after something that has inbuilt ability to produce output to the quality of at least my home system. This is made easy by the fact I will be hopefully carting my stereo speakers and custom built tripath amplifier to the hall, but I will obviously only neeed to replicate my current M-Audio Audiophile 2496 sound card.

I've been informed that with laptops I aught to be looking at external devices rather than anything internal, but there seems to be so many paths (and so many mixed reviews). I asked this question first on another forum and was informed the knowledge of such devices was unrivaled on here. I had a few high-quality and well reviewed suggestions such as the E-MU 0404 and the Edirol UA-25EX, but I realised a large number of features on these devices I'd never use and would rather pay exclusively for sound quality. Such a device I imagine would be a USB DAC (my knowledge about these is patchy at best) and hence my coming here.

One last note: I could attempt to survive my internship without a new piece of gear IF the gurus on here reckoned there were serious value points to be earnt by holding off a few months to September. If there's no compelling evidence I'll be saving much though I'm inclined to jump in.

Any thoughts greatly appreciated!
Thanks.

A USB DAC with a headphone amp would meet your needs. There are several of them available. I use a Benchmark DAC1 USB with my Mac Powerbook and Denon AH-D7000 cans, and am very pleased with the system for movies and music.

Thanks for your reply!

Excuse me being unknowledgable, but what's the significance of the headphone bit? Surely I need an output that's not amplified at all, as it'll then be going into an integrated amplifier?

And do you have an recomendations? I hear the Trends Audio UD-10.1 USB DAC gets highly praised.

Having seen the pricetag on the Benchmark model you use, I should have suggested a budget. Essentially I was hoping to pay as little as it took to beat my current sound card, but aside from that have a rough upper limit of £100 to £150.

Headamps are known to be solid preamps. I wouldn't worry about this too much. You can still take it to your amp.

Excellent. Do you have any particular recomendations for high-value solutions?

I suggested a DAC with a headphone amp because for some odd reason I read your original post as suggesting you wanted to use headphones. Re-reading suggests I was out to lunch. If you don't need cans, then you can can that desideratum.

Take a look at the Apogee Duet. Gets consistently good reviews, very capable, much cheaper than the Benchmark.

Ah I see! No I sincerely doubt I will be using headphones with my setup. For a long time in the future anyway.

The Duet looks indeed very good but it's still just a smidgeon out of my price range . Are there any at an even lower price? How about the Trends one mentioned above for size?

Any more thoughts anyone?

Devilsound Labs DAC

Cambridge Audio DacMagic

HRT Music Streamer

All of these three are very affordable and have received rave reviews by the Hi-Fi press (google on 'em) They are only a means to get your PC connected to your pre-amp or amp, if you plan to use headphones you will need to add a amp to the chain.

Out of the three I would have chosen the Devilsound DAC as it's the "cleanest", it's basically a cable with a integrated DAC - no need for extra cables or power sources...

Please note that these three are only for stereo, no 5.1 or DTS etc etc...

Happy hunting!

There is an Apogee Duet in the For Sale section for about $350. Maybe the used route would help?

Right now there is a Devilsound V2 USB DAC in Audiogon for $169, I am so tempted.
