PSU for V-DAC

Thread Starter
Can anyone suggest a reasonable psu for a v-dac,the one that came with it is melting the wallpaper.I am loathe to go with the Little Pinkie as it costs 95% of the v-dac but i can't see a 95% improvement.Something that isn't working quite so hard will be enough. Please don't say diy, cause i am a retired diesel mechanic (old school) and electricery is the work of the devil, that charges the battery.Cheers All.

I have been looking at doing the same as the power supply is cheap and nasty and tested to be unregulated!

So far available options I've come across:
Maplin: not worth it, possibly sounds worse ~£12
DIY: ?
Mean Well MES30A-3P1J - Medical Grade PSU, 12V 2A £30-40ish (I think)
Russ Andrews PowerPak II 12V DC psu with kimber cable £89
Little Pinkie - £105

Also Musical Fidelity V-Power upgrade PSU is listed on the back of V-DAC retail pack but i havent seen it for sale anywhere?

Would love to hear people opinions of PSU's tried.

I bought a V-DAC not long ago. I replaced the stock PS with a SEC-6 4 amp regulated linear DC 12-volt power supply. I figure it might extend the life of the DAC and increase performance.

This is where I bought it. Good CS and fast shipping.

Here is the Samlex America website product page.

Trying a mascot 9923 tonight, will see what comes of that...
Chose this because it is their best specd psu in a small design. 12V 1A
Load regulation: <1%
Line regulation: <0.1%
Ripple: <30mVp-p at max. load and 230VAC mains

With regards to the Mean Well MES30A-3P1J - Medical Grade PSU, 12V, is there a need to modify to fit with v-dac? Or can i plug it in right away

pipe a spare car battery straight in.

I'm sorry, don't quite understand you there!

A car battery is a high quality 12v DC power source - two wires and a plug to go into the v dac is all you need - and a 12 v battery.

Hi,

I recently purchased a V-DAC for use on my computer system and I tried it out on my main system.  Although it sounded OK it lacked a bit of get up and go (I believe this is termed PRaT) and the bass appeared lacking, I was please enough.

I had a couple of QED Positron power supplies lying around (originally used with a highly modded QED Digit); the is rated ay 15V and around 25W so it appeared to be well matched to the V-DAC. All I needed was a 2.1mm to 1.3mm adaptor (thanks Maplin)

Well the difference was quite startling; the bass wass there with lots of impact and it has lots of get up and go.  Details appears much clearer.  Overall it now sounds like a very good DAC!

Regards,

Jim

You can't underestimate the benefits of good clean power.  I got the same results giving the Dacmagic a good toroidal transformer.
