Shootout: 114 Portable Headphones Reviewed (Xiaomi Mi Headphones added 04/21/2015) - Page 61

I can so with some serious conviction that you wouldn't want to bother with the DJ100 without the amp.  It's just astonishing how different a headphone they are with and without the amp.  You just don't see this kind of thing very often.

i dont like to carry around an Amp, i have one in my desktop, but then why would i use portable cans in my desktop? for that i have others.

I liked the description in the review but i dont want to use a portable amp, but then I'll be missing a lot of their potential, so i guess they are not for me. great review.

Lots of comparisons with the HP700 huh? i guess is coming soon.

Damnit! That kind of rules out the DJ100 for me. I have a Musiland Monitor 02 which I consider more of an outboard DAC with a gutless wonder of an amp tacked on for the hell of it. Working now to get me a nice tube amp.

Anyways, I hope the bass on the DJ's is far, FAR better than the bass on the UR55's. Ugh... Just horrible. THE definition of one note bass. No matter what I played through them all I got for bass was this dreadful, droning boom, boom, boom. Blech! And when I say "boom" I don't mean overhang or anything... no, no. That was just the "one note" of bass that they played. Boom, boom, boom.

As a matter of fact the bass was so terrible that I hardly noticed any of the other qualities or lack thereof from the phone. All I can say is that they didn't seem to produce any other egregious errors... It's just too bad about that bass. These could have been a good phone - as they are now you can keep them.

One more thing about the UR55's that I haven't seen mentioned: I have a medium/large head and these fit over my ears but just barely. If you have a large to very large head then forgedaboudit!

Interesting comments about the bass on the UR-55. I didn't have any issues with the bass. For $50 they're not perfect, but I really enjoyed them. I really want to get another pair since the DT-235 and M30 are a bit too big and awkward for exercise. For me, it's like the UR-55 was made for a band like Pearl Jam!

For anyone that cares, the DJ100 is a perfect match with the Total Airhead/Bithead. I've found it's a horrid match with the E5 and not good with the Nuforce Mobile. I don't know why. It also works well with my Schiit Asgard. I haven't noticed any huge differences in sound quality with the Dj100's going from the Airhead to the Asgard.

For me the symptoms of an underamped DJ100 were lack of bass and poor mids. It's weird because the DJ100 has those forward sounding mids when properly amped.

BTW sadly I've found out today I don't really like my new D2000 unamped. Absolutely love it with a desktop amp. Sorry, I had to get that out since I'm bored. k601 and D2000 is such a perfect combination.

Just thought I'd mention that I'm not meaning to troll or go against anyone else's word  - it's just what I heard when I had them.

Perhaps mine where defective. Who knows?

completely agree with tdockwieler.  Total Airhead/Bithead.  Both of those sound great.  I have tried mine on the E5 and they sound ok if you keep the bass boost turned off.

.  ..But I really like mine with the Airhead.

That said, if the E5 was all anyone had, it's still better than no amp at all.

Added Denon DN-HP700. I think this one stands next to the DJ100 as one of more underrated <$100 sets around here. Perhaps even more so since it isn't as picky with amps - just needs something powerful to shine.

My god you're on a roll.

I demand, I absolutely DEMAND a review of the JVC HA-E9 clip-ons!

What's that you say? They don't make them anymore??? Well, they should damnit - they sound great!

Maybe if ljokerl does a positive review they'll bring 'em back...

Not strictly necessary with them but they do improve - whether it's worth it depends on the amp I guess - no use in having an amp that's 6x more expensive than the headphones you buy it for. A simple mini3 works pretty well with them.

Interested - yes - but I don't have time. I really thought I'd work on the IEM thread for a while after this week but I've somehow got five brand new portables sitting on my rack waiting to be reviewed right now.

Omg! i think we have a winner! AT50 looks great. The only problem is the somewhat power-hunger. So because i dont see myself buying an amp i will stick with the CAL!. I think they might fit better with my Cowon J3. Unfortunately amazon raised the price up to 80 euros from 60.

As for the treat per day.I think your spoiling us will all those headphones cool.gif
