I'll tell you what amp it was connected to by the end of the day. ;)

It's not that I can't pay the extra $60 for the Audio-Technica, but I was just wondering whether or not you thought there would be a significant difference over the Grado SR80i.

They are different sound signatures but I do like the M50 better in general. I had the old SR80 (non-i) and actually preferred both my Alessadro MS1 and SR60i to it. I do think the difference between Grados and the M50 the is significant but again it's more signature difference than quality difference.

M31 has more bass but of course the bass of the Atrios is better quality, being 3x the price.

Joker, I wonder if you found the treble on M50 a bit thin and metallic sounding?

Is the K181DJ a great step in quality from the K518DJ? How big they are?

No, not notably so. I find the HD25 treble to be metallic-sounding.

The cup area is probably 3x larger on the K181. For sound differences please refer to the review.

That big?!? wow ... I don't think that I'm gonna buy them, then.

ljokerl, something I have been wondering about is how does the score for sound on these portables equate to the score given for the IEMs? for example, would a score of 8 on a port indicate you perceived its sound to be as satisfying subjectively as an 8 score on an IEM?  I tried to find this in your first post, but didn't see it.  I would like to have a portable that would sound like my REOs.

The scales are independent. I don't like comparing cans to IEMs so each thread has its own benchmarks. I'd say that the ratings are comparable to about +/-1pt. I am not aware of any portables that sound like the RE0.

This thread was very useful, for helping me find the best portable headphones for my IPOD. I had no idea what to get before, and now I do.

Good to hear, glad the thread helped!

I would also like to thank you for this thread, it really helped me making my decision (AKG K181DJ).

Thanks for sharing your passion with us :)

btw, just a suggestion: might be a good idea to add in the table if the cable is detachable or not ;)

I'm all for making data easier to access but I feel that adding a stat for detachable cable would be a slippery slope. Next I'll be noting which sets are single-sided, which have coiled cords, which ones fold, etc. If I had the ability to make the table dynamic I'd definitely implement all that but the platform doesn't allow it. I think searching through the thread for "detachable" should be fairly straight forward at this point.

Good choice with the K181DJ. Very fun headphones.

I am curious, why is that the Denon AH-D1001 and the Denon AH-D1100 are not even considered in the analysis?

Keep in mind that Joker actually buys most of these headphones and very generously spends his time reviewing what he can (not to mention his even larger IEM thread). It is not physically possible to review every single headphone out there, nor is he obligated to do so.

The D1001 and Creative Aurvana Lives are clones and sound more or less identical, but the D1001 may have slightly better build quality. Check for the CAV.
