I seriously do not need another cheap portable headphone as I currently have the JVC Flats, Senn PX100, AKG 26P, JVC S700, Philips 460, KSC 75, KSC 35, and probably some others I have forgotten. With only two ears, why do the Cobys at the local Meijer priced at $7 even appeal to me? Why? Why am I already thinking which Meijer will be on my route today?

Something about getting good sound for such a pittance is irresistible.

I mean, I own my expensive reference cans and everything but I just can't go picking them up everyday on a whim... unless I want to bankrupt myself that is.

It's cheap thrills, man. Enjoy! At least you're not collecting speakers like I do... lol

From what you've written about HD-25, they're modding-friendly... Also because of the soundstage and treble (/me's gripe with Senn had always been the darkness and that dry German treble character) they sound like they're not worth the money over, say, CAL/Denon AH-D1001 recabled with an amp. CAL/AH-D1001 are less efficient, but if there's something good about them, it's the soundstage (and dynamics).

Are the Coby CV-185 hard-sealed? Can they be disassembled?

Thanks. No direct comparison to the Flats because I don't have them anymore. From memory I prefer the Cobys to the Flats as well but I can't quite put them on the same level as the KSC75, though I can certainly see some people finding the CV-185 to be more enjoyable.

Yes, soundstage is not a strong suit of the HD25. If you're purely after sound and value soundstaging, the CAL/D1001 are a much better deal. However, I would never throw the CAL! in my bag or wear them on the bus the way I do with HD25s.

I did not try to disassemble the CV-185 but I think there were screws under the pads. Perhaps jant71 can address this .

The Coby have three screws under the pads. The cable is routed through pre-drilled holes similar to the Denon P372. I would recommend those wanting to recable the Coby add resistance as they are a bit too efficient. Or if wanting to use them as a housing it should be noted that the cups are quite flat, 2-3mm less deep than the P372.

Here the recabled AH-D1000 go anywhere. They rarely get off the neck though.

80mm headphone cushion ear pad foam earpad for Grado - eBay (item 250527614631 end time Apr-07-10 21:59:29 PDT)
A decent price for Denon/Coby/Grado size pads.

I think the portable woodies by ATH and the Ultrasone Editions fall into this category for me. And maybe the B&W P5.
