I'd also like to see the akg 450 in the mix as well given that they are cheaper than many of the phones listed over here, just like the k81/518.

This is truly a great thread joker, so useful. I'm half for the thought you should expand it to just include your full-size arsenal, if possible. Th RX700s people ask alot, and it would be nice to have them compared to these other great cans. I got the PX200-II today, love it especially for its size, but it really makes me appreciate the RX700s even more; these don't seem like they'll be able to match up to them even after burn-in. As far as I know, these don't benefit so hugely from burn-in. Still can't believe how much sound I got out of 35 dollars. I'm loving being able to stick the PX200IIs into my pocket though.

$35.00 for the RX700's or for the PX200-II's, if for the PX200-II where did you find them?

Oh no, the RX700s lol. The PX200IIs were 70. They're getting slightly better with burn in, most notably on the low end, but the changes aren't nearly as drastic as those that occur on the RX700 with burn-in. AFAIK, there simply isn't a better budget headphone out there.

Any comparison you can offer between the RX700 and the S700? I love the styling and size of the S700 but the RX700 is getting such great reviews that I might be missing a huge dose of quality if I choose the S700. Would the S700 be appropriate for commercial airline travel?

There is no doubt that the RX700 is a better-sounding headphone than the S700. The reason the S700 got such high marks from me is the convenience of that little form factor. The sound of the RX700 is much fuller, more detailed, and more balanced. They do a better job of relating spatial cues and hit harder and more precisely with bass (at least when modded they do).

I can tell you from experience that the RX700 is completely useless on a flight, though. They're too big for sleeping in and the isolation is below-average. I think the S700 would work much better, but don't expect them to completely drown out all background noise. For that IEMs or ANC phones are probably more logical.

Wow. Haven't checked out this thread for a while and am quite surprised at the improvement on the new PX200. The older versions was quite universally reviled as inferior to the old PX100.

Reading this thread makes me want to go and get some cans now that IEMs are out of the equation for me ... got some persistent swimmer's ear problems.

Thanks for this thread. I really liked reading your impression/reviews.

One thing, I have CAL!s but I don't like their bass. With some tracks the bass loses definition and becomes fuzzy. I encountered this with Kyuss in FLAC. You never noticed?

From my experience I can say that they are nearly the same thing. (same fostex drivers)
The CAL! headband is a bit shorter and the pads are a bit broader so there is less room for your ears.
