You could give the M-Audio Q40 a look. It's very bassy, and is easily driven by and ipod or computer.

Gear mentioned in this thread:

Amazon.com: Audio Technica ATH-M50 Closed-Back Dynamic Monitor Headphones: Musical Instruments

Also, amazon isn't always the cheapest place to buy stuff.
New M50s are $95 on ebay, considering picking up a pair myself.

http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-Audio-Techni...3%3A1|294%3A50 ~ listed at $99 but he will accept an offer of $95

Well, I'm going to use these for airplanes and such.

So yes, isolation would be nice.

By any chance, do you know if the Ultrasone's (DJ1) can run solely on an iPod?

Ultrasones were MADE for DJ's. Consider the PROline 650 on the FS forums for 110 shipped

As long as it's a 3.5mm, yes. You won't be able to drive it well though. Out of a mixer-board or whatever they're called you can though.

Or any portable amp? Will that do?

Would the HFI's (ultrasone) be better for iPod/comp listening?

meh not true go on ultrasone's website and brush up on the headphones. They are designed to be run easily thats why they have lower impedence then some of their other headphones.

Skullcandy has a bad rep for having average sound quality, too heavy bass, and an over done price tag. However these are good. I listen to rock on these, and I like that some times on a good pluck of a guitar string I still get the chills. The detail is pretty good on these. I like that in dub step the bass is pretty straight forward, almost like Sony typical sound signature, but deeper. The highs are rounded, not too dark sounding, but enough to smooth out shrill highs. The speaker does very well on fast paced music such as techno. The sound in these is Eqable and handles very well on all genres I think. I wanted to get some Bose instead, but the Bose would have only been good sometimes with its very warm and noticable sound signature. These SkullCandys are very durable. I have had mine for a year now. I noticed the cushion on the headband started coming off, I applied a little super glue and nothing has happened with them since. I carry them in my backpack with my school books from campus to campus. The plastic on these is pretty strong, and feels nice to the touch. I kind of wish I looked into some Grados or sennheisers, but those do not fold; and those carry unique sound signatures I worry could make some of my songs not as enjoyable, like it might help other songs more enjoyable. I am happy with my set. I wouldn't use these on a portable source. These have 50mm drivers. Unless you get an amp too, I would recommend computer and laptop use only.
