Looks the same to me just uglier

They do use the same drivers but the ER4 are hand assembled and channel matched to a very low tolerance in the US where as the HF2/5 are mass produced somewhere in the far east. The cable on the HF2/5 is better and less microphonic (and without the resistor pod) than on the ER4 and the HF2/5 pods dont stick out so far from the ear due to a different angle/attachment of the cable. The HF2/5 cable however is not user replaceable.

It can't

In my opinion, the Etys cannot hold a candle to the Westone 3. Unless you like hyper detailed and a bass shy signature. I had the Ety ER-4p about 3 days before I could not take it anymore. I heard the Westone 3 at Canjam for about 30-40 minutes and could have spent all day listening to them.

But to each their own. I am anxiously waiting for a pair of Affinity Aura customs that I won at the CanJam raffle and hope they put me off buying anything else for awhile.

Yes, any news about that? This thread has died.

After a few weeks of the Westone 3, it felt as though HF2/5s had absolutely no bass.

My HF2s also broke, twice. Which is fortunate because then I wouldn't have got the W3s

I hate when people make such assumptions. the fact of the matter is the ER4p have plenty of bass. What i found is that many people dont get a really good fit because they dont realise how deep these babys go into your ear canal.
I have the ER4S with the smallest foamie they make and insert them to where the blue and red connectors (where they meet the barrel) are about 2 millimeters from my ear lobe. this not only gives me GREAT isolation but is clearly IMHO the best sound sig I have heard from any mass market IEM and that includes Shure SE530, Westone 3, Phonak PFE, UE TF10, UE SF5,Shure SE 210,310,E4c,E2c and REO.

That being said I preffer a more neutral IEM with a flat response i.e. ER4S. Anything else just sounds "fake" to me. But you must admit ER series has been around for what 15 years or so without any (maybe minor) chages and tehy are still considered a bencmark in the IEM world, with a single driver no less.

this was not meant to offend anyone, i just share your passion. Oh, and pardon the typos I'm typing with one hand a drinking a Latte with the other.

Edit: I have not tried the UM3x but would love to compare them to the ER4S.

I am going to buy some HF5's and could someone tell me what are Shure olives, where to get them?  I guess maybe they will go on the HF5's to make them more comfortable?  And what is the spacer mod?

They're black foam tips made by Shure, called olives due to their shape, you'll find them on amazon/ebay etc. They are quite comfortable for me and isolation of an ety with a foam tip is about the highest possible. Spacer mod in relation to a shure olives is, i presume, taking out the core to use with an earphone with a wider bore, not needed on the hf5.

How's the bass on these compared to the klipsch S4s?

About 6 months ago I decided my IE8, however nice sounding, didn't give enough isolation for commuting.

So I ordered the HF5, and when they arrived I literally took the IE8s out and inserted the HF5 in the same minute, half expecting an analytical cold, bass arm edgy sound.

Not! I got a clear spacious naturally yet detailed sound signature that I instantly liked to my own surprise and great isolation too (I use Shure olives).

To be honest, I listened to the IE8s on my Sony X1060 with EQ flat, and on the HF5 I added Clearbass +2, rest flat. That makes it sound perfectly balanced for all genres to my ears.

I love the HF5's. Though their sound signature is different, in sound quality they are a match for the -more expensive- IE8.

Not only treble but also the mid range sound great, very clear yet smooth, never edgy, voices are very natural and stand out. IMO bass is very good, it is there when it needs to be there, there just is not that pleasant coloration in the form of extra midbassweight that the IE8s added to everything. But it doesn't need this extra flavor, sounding great without having to add something.

Within 14 days, I put my IE8s up for sale.

I also like the way the HF5s look, black in my case, small, beautiful and functional, and I love the cord, strong, doesn't tangle too much, not much microphonics (have to say though, the senn cord is even more impressive).

Only disadvantage so far is that the cord is not replaceable, but the 2 year guarantee gives peace of mind.

These things stay until it dies, and will then be replaced with new HF5s (or E4s), to my considerable surprise I've become an Ety convert.

I have the Westone W3s and the Ety ER4Ps.  I use my W3s out of an iPhone with a FiiO E1 LOD amp... nice, warm bass filled sound.  I use my ER4Ps differently.  I use an Arrow amp with the Etys, it can boost bass and has X-feed.  My Etys also have the Apuresound cable, tip mod and Shure olives.  Used in this way the Etys are clearly better than the W3s.  The Etys provide detail you just don't notice or hear with the W3s, yet set up this way you get deep controlled bass without losing out on the the Ety's great midrange or treble.  In addition, the isolation is second to none and if you wear the cable behind your ears... no microphonics.  I also have mostly lossless files on my iPhone.   When I amped my W3s they still did not deliver like the Etys do.
