Ah, that's right, AKG does seem to have a track record of letting the same model 'phones have different sound signatures, depending on their date of production.

This is a known and measured difference. Low serial numbers are bassier than high serial numbers. Fitz even produced a graph detailing the differences. It's not "quality control", it's a design revision in a headphone that was produced for 15 years, and it's the only one.

Don't spend $1000 on an out of production headphone if you don't wish to, but don't go smearing AKG's quality control before you understand what you're talking about.

I know sarcasm can be difficult to detect with only text to go by, but I think that charliex had his tongue so far in his cheek in that post that it's going to leave a permanent mark. Perhaps he'll let us know for sure, but that's the way I read it.

It is well-known, that even the famous HD650 has at least two different sound signatures, when comparing recent ones, with earlier ones.

I have had both types, and it is a difference that can be easily heard.
So, why not with some other cans, as well?
