Looking for Quality Headphones for an mp3 player

Hi,

Ive just bought a new sony mp3 player and ive got some fairly decent sony in ear headphones to go with it.

Im looking to upgrade to some larger over the head headphones however.

Im considering some denon AH-D1001's.

Can anyone give me some recommendations? (over/under £100).

Will I likely have trouble driving larger headphones through an mp3 player?.

Is it likely to be a worthwhile upgrade?.

Should I stick to in ear headphones?.

Thanks. Alex.

The denons should sound good from your mp3 player, but I wouldn't recommend them for portable use, if that is what you are thinking. If the mp3 player is your main source and you expect to be on the go often, I would look at IEMs, as they are easier to drive and provide better isolation.

Another thing to make sure of is the quality of your source material. All of the equipment in the world can't make an mp3 sound fantastic.

The headphones will only be used around the house and in my bedroom, so as long as they aren't massive its ok.

When you mention IEM's, do you mean in ear headphones with the round rubber bits on the end?.

I think the sony headphones included with the mp3 were like this, but I prefer the fit of my over the ear style fit in ear headphones.

IEM stands for In Ear Monitor.. So yes, those in ear headphones with the round rubber bits (or tips) on the end.

The Denon D1001 would probably be good. They are semi-portable and will work from your MP3 player.
You should tell us about the music you listen though.. The Denons aren't great for everything.

Im also interested in the Audio Technica ATH-AD700s and Bose Triport on ears which were recommended to me.

The AD700 sound great, but they are massive. I have worn them outside a few times but always feel conspicous. Plus they let in every external sound so may not be a good choice outside.

If isolation isn't of paramount importance you might consider the ATH-ES7 or ESW9. Also Shure is releasing 3 new phones sometime in the next 2 weeks that might be right up your alley.

I find all Bose headphones to be way to relaxed and to much bass, not enough treble for my tastes.

Ive come accross this website thats selling Audio Technica ATH ES7s for £45.97 called Pop-Shopping Store.

Should I be suspicous of this website?.

Apparently they are located in Hong Kong and China and I couldn't help but notice that they also sell sex toys!.

Well, that price for the ATH-ES7's actually just a bit lower than you can get them in the USA if you're lucky..

But, these ATH-ESW9's are way too cheap and are definitely fake.
Audio-Technica ATH-ESW9 Sovereign Wood Headphones - Pop-Shop..

So, yeah, be suspicious
