Hi, ok so its basically what the title says... A netbook would be better but I guess there are no netbooks yet with optical or coax output? What about laptops?
Thanks,

Have you had a look at the ASUS N10J netbook? Has a SPDIF digital output and also has HDMI digital output. And as far as netbooks go it is currently one of the only netbooks worth getting as it has a Nvidia GeForce graphics chip. ASUSTeK Computer Inc.

All of the MacBooks have optical out. I love mine.

Hey, ooooh thanks for that! I am a bit confused by all the different mac products b ut the asus lookd promising.
Anybody know if the top samsung netbook has an optical out?
Wow, I am so happy the jvc has one at least!
Can you buy a mac with windows these days, preinstalled that is?

I don't think any Macs come preinstalled with Windows. But it's easy enough to install so don't worry about it.

Hello, yeah well mayube but I would prefer to have something with it preinstalled, I will take a look at the asus and see if the samsung has it as well.

Hey any suggestions for 15-17inch laptops with spdiff are welcome too. I am rather reluctant about macs. I need windwos because my screenreader hal runs on it and although I could use linux windows is just the easiest with my scanning software omnipage and my braille display bc640. I think the n10j might be a good solution especially for on the go since it is small but I am afraid the processor wont be good enough, i am using a toshiba tecra a7 or a9 now and that thing has 2gb internal ram and can be slow on occasion.

The whole point of buying a Mac is so that you don't have to use Windows.

Hey, Well, I talked to a friend who has the samsung nc10 and apparently the screenreader works on there so it should work on the n10j too.
Do the normal eee pcs not have optical? I dont need the nvidea graphics card and the battery live is not longer then normal eee pc, the only extra expense I know of owuld be for that graphics card.
A friend of mine told me his old hp laptop had optical too.

Hello, yes well unfortunately I am not sure at all tha tmy braille display would work on os x. I know it works under linux though. I wonder if asus ships their netbooks with linux as well as windows, would b enice to experiment. Although i bet all netbooks can start from a usb drive so I could always boot linux from there.
A solid state drive would be nice I will have to check into it to see if asus sells their laptops with one or maybe it can be modified to use one.

Try some HP DV9xxx. They all have have SPDIF output and range from 15->17 inches.

Lenovo Thinkpads *60 and newer can be placed in the Advanced Mini Dock which provides a coax digital out via the laptop's internal sound chip. You can leave your monitor, USB devices, digital sound cable, etc. plugged into the dock and take your laptop with you, never having to worry about unplugging anything.

I don't actually own a dock since I have a desktop computer but I'd certainly buy one otherwise. There's also an Advanced Dock which adds an ultrabay and even gives you a PCI Express graphics upgrade slot.

ASUS N10J (my main computer) has the normal Atom 1.6GHz processor in it so it is the same speed as all other netbooks (not the fastest but i have no problem with it) Biggest hard drive option is 320GB (i think) which is much bigger then most other netbooks on the market. The graphics card is a huge plus for this netbook and is the only reason why i brought this netbook over a laptop in the first place. I never play games ether but the graphic chip allows me to have a HDMI output (",) meaning it can now be a fully functional multi media device. The processor can be factory overclocked to 1.8GHz and with a bit of know how i run mine at 2.1GHz all the time which makes it around 30% faster. If you want any further info on the ASUS just let me know as i use this 24/7 (Also note that the graphic chip in the ASUS is better then the 9400 found in MacBooks)

Also your questions about the Eee pc line, I don't think any of them have SPIDF on them but i can't say i have checked. Some have longer battery life but the is due to the fact they aren't as good. The Eee pc line are there budget range and the N10 are the top of the line range (infact ASUS don't call them netbooks they call them notebooks). N10J has almost every feature currently in netbooks, bar 3g modem and CD/DVD drive but the extra money over the Eee goes towards having Bluetooth, HDMI (you can run 1080p through it with the right software), SPIDF, Graphic chip, Wireless b/g AND N draft (the fastest) gigabit ethernet, Express card 34 slot, Windows Vista which they have to pay a full licence fee for unlike XP (i would change this tho, i run windows 7 like a dream) etc etc...

Hello, Well, I must sayt hat I am not happy at all that the n10j runs vista, I hate that operating system because it is a lot less accessible to me then xp at the moment. I wa splanning to move to windows 7 in two years or so on my main home pc but, especially on a netbook, i would greatly prefer running windows xp. Do you know if there are windows xp drivers available for this one or if I can buy with xp directly? I wonder how i would have to install xp if I would do it later, i guess an external optical drive would be my best bet.
I guess asus does not load their laptops with ubuntu netbook remix alternatively?
I am still also considering a netbook pro, i will have to check if my local store sells them and would be willing to install windows for me, which is always alot easier then if I have to do it myself especially since I dont think any of those laptop still has a parallel or serial port (which would be needed if I want to install windows myself).
Thanks for the information everyone!
