Supra-Aural Headphones

Hey guys, I'm looking for some headphones for my dad.

He wants supra-aural headphones, which I don't know much about.
He also wants a warm sound with a pretty good sized soundstage.

Currently he has a Auzentech HDA X-Plosion 7.1 DTS Connect soundcard, but he might get a better one if it would improve sound quality a lot (though I think the one he has is pretty good).

The price range is up to $200.

Any help would be great. Thanks!

Is he willing to go used?

There's a ESW9 going for $200 in the FS forum: http://www.head-fi.org/forums/f10/fs...h-esw9-432086/

What do they sound like?

I'm not sure if he'd go for used, but if these headphones have the sound he's looking for then he'd certainly consider them.

I would put Grados under "warm" to some degree, and they make some fantastic supraaurals..If you're willing to go used, you could probably do even better for $200.

Soundstage might be kind of an issue though.

But then, that AT above is always good too.

The ESW9 is not supraural.

Grados are not warm sounding.

What sound card or other equipment will these headphones be plugged into?

Warm to me, as in, not sterile..essentially.

OP, why does it have to be supraaural? IMO, these are probably the least comfortable option, save IEMs. Is your dad insistent on wearing supras?

Oh really? Which Grado? And from what source / amplification?

Seems obvious the OP already stated this is his dad's preference.

Looking at your sig, your Shure E4c IEMs are warm sounding. So you think the SR80 will sound warm from the OP's source / amplification?

My dad insists he wants supra-aural. I'm not sure why, but that's what he wants.

He currently has a Auzentech HDA X-Plosion 7.1 DTS Connect soundcard, though he might get a new one if it would make a big difference in sound quality.

No, I guess not..

So any more suggestions guys?

Grado 225 or 125 with flats or pads would do well. A small portable dac/amp combo would do better than a sound card.

Yes, it is. OP, are you sure you mean supra aural and not circumaural? Supra means the phone sits on the ears, and circum means it goes all the way around. I only ask because supra aural is a strange requirement when searching for a phone.

Yeah, I mean supra-aural. It's just what my dad wants. I'm not sure why. I have a pair of Beyerdynamic DT770s and I love them, but he wants supra-aural phones.
