Looks like I might be stateside this weekend, does anyone know if guitar center, specifically the one in Buffalo, is open on July 4th? If not then maybe Sunday? Website doesn't say anything but I know the mall is open..

It'd be nice to get a chance to hear some ultrasones too

My local Guitar Center is open on 4th of July. I had called a couple of days ago. Search for locations and give that store a call and ask. And yes, I have seen them in stock at the outlets but they are more pricier (but not as much as Canada).

I think that the dt770 pro would be the best alternative, simply because they are excellent for games and movies. And they are soooooooo comfy, much better than the 250s for sure.
His taste in music (dnb, house, electro) is also good with the bassy bigboys that are dt770, albeit the ATs have much broader soundstage (oh horrible vocabulary, why do thee mock me), you are going to need a amp or something if you want to listen to anything but dnb\power metal with the dt770s

so imho:

toss out the 250's, I have\had them for a while(broken now) and they are not nearly as good as the dt770 in any circumstance

I think the dt770 would be best for you, but the M50 are not far behind, we all know the dt770 are ugly, they are ugly as ****, while the M50 are sexy beast.
The M50 works almost just as good without an amp as with an amp, but the dt770s do not (Except the 32 ohm version I guess)
altho, if you plan on never having it away from your computer, then you should most def buy the Dt770s, I see no reason to consider any of the other two

imho

Ok, just came back from Buffalo/Niagara.. haven't bought anything, same selection at that Guitar Center as Long & Mcquade here and prices almost identical with conversion, no ultrasones for me to try, no denon or AT iems which I would've picked up even at the higher price. Oh well, at least I bought a shirt.. and a towel

Anyway, thanks for your observant input Hanus, that is exactly the kind of help I needed. From the sounds of it either phone will be a winner for me, especially since right now my standards are pretty low.

Cheers.

Re the M50: you'll probably hear them and make your own decision, but if you can't, you may like to bear in mind that they are quite a bass heavy phone. Quite nice and clear for acoustic music - mids and upper frequencies; but with rock - bass guitars, kick drums etc... they can been quite boomy.
