Cambridge Audio 640C v2 on the way - opinions?

I am exchanging my faulty Sonata CD30 for a 640C. I have heard great things about the 640C; but not very recently here. Anyone care to tell me what I can expect? They look to have pretty good DACs on board.

All metal (no plastic) chassis with acoustic dampening
Power supply features a large audiophile grade toroidal transformer
Custom Sony transport and servo that reduces jitter
Two Wolfson WM8740 24-bit/192kHz chips which are quite capable

The 640C V2 is fast, good imaging and detail, exceptional mids, perhaps a bit bright on the high end, bass is OK to my ears.

Enjoy it, Stewart. My friend has one and he wants to move up to a Rega, but I think that's perhaps meeting the law of diminishing returns head on. If I were to give up my NAD, this is the deck I'd probably seek as a good, mid-fi and perhaps a cut above CDP. Happy listening!

Looks like you got made a good choice.

I'm trying to decide between (a) a black Marantz CD 5003 player and a black Woo Audio 6 and (b) a silver Cambridge Audio 540/640 player and a silver Woo Audio 6. Decisions, decisions.

Edit because I am dumb and I thought this was about the 640P.

I auditioned a Marantz 5003 and felt the soundstage was a bit cramped for my liking, but that's just me. In my opinion bass wasn't as good as the Azur, but still quite capable and many people love the Marantz at its price point. I do think the Woo will make it sing like Pavarotti though!

Crappy CD's played on any player will sound crappy and good CD's will sound very good. I recently purchased about ten various Jazz remasters and half of them are nothing but poor sounding to say the most.

Good choice. The 640 have very good mids, tamed highs and great sound staging. Bass is just nice.. Overall, its a polite CDP. The sound would be more mellow compared to a marantz which iMO is bright and forward..

The construction is excellent. Bulit like a tank. So is the remote that comes with it. Love the remote

Enjoy!

I used the 640c V2 for a few months with a Purity Audio KICAS Caliente and HD 650's. I'd agree with the other poster's comments - overall a really nice CDP, although I always felt that there was a touch of digital glare. Now I'm using it as a transport feeding my HR Balanced Desktop, and I would say the built-in Home DAC is just a tad more smooth and musical, with better bass. Still, I would be more than happy if I had never switched to the HR DAC.

agreed, the 640 is a has a bright tonal glare...it works well with a darker can like the 650s, but i would think grados would be alittle to edgy.

Not a bad CDP though, made well from a good company.

I just unpacked my new 640C and gave it a spin, and all I can say is - wow. This is a fantastic-sounding CD player. I didn't think a CD player would make much of a difference, when compared with the amp or headphones, but this player clearly sounds better than anything I've had previously. I'm impressed!

are you using the 640s internal dac or a separate dac? does 640 have any odd behaviors? i'm still seeking a transport maybe a mid or lower end cambridge or nad.

I'm using it with the internal (dual) DACs. So far (I've only tried it out for ~ 2 hours), the performance is outstanding - no odd issues with it seeking tracks or cutting off the beginning of a song. No weird electronic noises. it just plays and sounds great as is.

Can you post some pictures of the 640C?

I'll try to do that over the next few days.
