I was thinking of getting yamahas too before I finally decided to go with KRKs. Yamahas sound as good as your crappy recording-they reveal everything, for normal listening way too much as they are meant for studio recording

Hmm, not sure I agree with that statement. The MSP series is certainly brutal with crap recordings; the HSM series not.

I've heard some good things about the KRK's but also some bad things, I.e. Bass is overpowering, and they don't get recommended over the Yammies as much.

I think in order to play this safe the A5's is the way to go. Am I right?

dude, just go to Guitar Center for 30 minutes and take a listen at the speakers. You'll regret it if you don't.

dude, I've been trying to get over there but I've been busy as hell. But I should be able to check it out tomorrow. Heading to the mall with a couple buddies.

The only problem I see with auditioning these speakers is that they don't carry the A5. It would be nice to compare them all together!

I don't understand these comments about revealing monitors being too fatiguing. Any speaker that "smooths" bad recordings will "dull" good ones. Detail is not fatiguing, edgy treble is. So you have a choice, you can have speakers that will take the edge off of treble - when it's bad or when its good, or you can reach for the eq when its bad.

Big fan of Mackies (own original HR824's), didn't realize they had come out with MR5's.

That said, I wouldn't want to listen to them enjoyably. For that, I have my Quads (12L active). Out of your price range, but the L-ites are not. Oops, I don't think those are active. Don't know what the 9L actives street for, but I would at least look into it.
