Need some advice on a good car stereo... - Page 3

Since I'm waiting to install parts in my Pontiac, I took my old Pioneer Head Unit (DEH-2900 I think) from the car I just sold and went to put it in my 1987 Bronco (my wood hauling truck). After it was installed, I noticed that there was was no stereo and that the balance and fade was not working properly. To make a long story short, I took the vehicle to Best Buy to see what their installation guys thought of the problem. It ends up that the wiring was screwed up....and since they were looking at it, I asked them to put a set of the infinity's in since the existing speakers were 22 years old and sounded terrible. Two car stereo upgrades at once LOL....

So I've heard the Infinity's and they're OK. Detail is actually quite good as is the midrange. I would agree that as installed they are a little bright. I am also hearing a little sibilance on certain tracks that I haven't heard in years (since I've upgraded my headphone rig). Regardless, I Eq'ed it a bit and there's no question that it sounds better than it did.

One of the guy's I was working with seemed to know his stuff and commented that I really should get an amp for my new car's rig. He recommended this one:

Alpine MRP-F300 V-Power Series 4-channel car amplifier 50 watts RMS x 4 at Crutchfield.com

It's obviously a lower end amp, but he say it will put the icing on the cake to my upgrade. The headphone enthusiast in me can appreciate good amping.

For starters, it might be diminishing returns due to all of the other car noises. Also, I don't know where the heck it would go as there is not enough room under the seat.

I say save your pennies to get a nice amp for your other car. Your right about the noisy environment of the truck, it is going to make it hard to pull detail out from under the ambient roar. You have a nice system in it to crank some tunes when your hauling wood I don't know if I would sink much more into it.

The amp suggestion was actually made in regards to the other (nicer) car....not the truck.

Sorry, shouldn't try to reply when I did not thoroughly read a post.

I'd like to thank all those who provided (what ended up to be) some pretty good advice.

While I have held off on the amp for now, the system is in and sounds pretty good (much better than stock and the truck install I mentioned earlier). The Dynamat in particular works fantastically....and I am so impressed over the reduction of road noise that I am considering putting it in my wife's vehicle for that reason alone.

Thanks all!
