I know they are not worth the money, but are they worth 50?

My answer would be no. I own those, and while the SQ i do believe is worth $50, you get ZERO isolation with them because they are not actually IEMs. They do not penetrate the ear canal in any way, and therefore do not isolate at all. You could spend $50 on the NE-7Ms or something similar and get similar sound quality with at least some form of isolation
EDIT:
Also, if you're trying to talk audio to somebody, having bose products will certainly weaken your credentials as an audiophile. (or a "junior" audiophile in your case :-P) Not that you're trying to please other people, but you'll feel better knowing that you bought some quality stuff.

I spent a good half hour listening to the bose IEMs side by side with my Nuforces (Ne-8) at the Bose "Boutique" and I have to say that the sound is very decent. They are not worth $99, but at half price I would say they are well worth it. In soundstage and clarity they compare favorably to my Nuforces and the bass is a bit stronger. Isolation is nonexistent, but if that's a non-issue then you are fine.
Note: you should't care what people think of your choice of headphones. I'm sure ill lose some head-fi points for mentioning bose favorably, but honestly I expected much less from their IEMs.

Why is Bose such an "anti-status" and do we care about such things?
The IE's have a very warm, full, and relaxing sound to them. Depending on what you listen to, they could potentially be very nice sounding. They do, however, need to be amped (in my opinion).
These are not IEMs, though, so as others have said, if you need isolation, look elsewhere. The one thing I dislike about them is that their earpieces tend to pop off regularly, which is very annoying.
For the right consumer, I think they're worth full retail. For that consumer, 50 bucks is a steal.
If you're a "Bose Basher" which seems to be the case with your statement, you might just look elsewhere. Unless, of course, you want to listen to them so that you can feel justified in your "bashification". Hey, cool new word.

$50 isn't a bad price, but it really depends what you're looking for...
If you can do without isolation and you want comfort, a bit of bass impact, a warm sound signature, and you don't care about having a lot of detail, the bose in-ears can make for pleasant listening. They simply are not a hifi IEM, but they are inoffensive to listen to and extremely comfortable. (my wife can't tolerate the feeling of conventional buds or sealing iem's and is quite happy with the bose)
However, if you want a dynamic iem with better sound quality at the same price, that isolates, and reveals far more detail across the frequency spectrum, I'd point you towards a pair of NE-7m's.
