Grado PS1000 In The House

Thread Starter
I just got these headphones. First I will start out with the bad. The shinny metal part of these headphones has a couple of chips and some other small scratches plus some scuffing. 6 total in all. What should I do? I paid a lot of money for these and I am a little pissed at their condition. I don't want to be put in a situation where I have to send them back and then wait another 3 months for a new pair. IMO, they should send me a new pair and then when I get it, I will send these back.

Okay now that is out of the way. How about sound impressions out of the box? Now that I have heard these, I don't want to send them back. IMO, these are incredible headphones. When I first picked them up and put them on, my first thought was these are heavy and are going to be uncomfortable. However, after putting them on listening to some tunes, I forgot or was not even conscious they are on my head. If I had to describe the phone in one word, it would be effortless. The PS 1000 somehow put everything out there without being in your face. Compared to the GS 1000s, the mids are more prominent, bass is tighter, and there is more detail. I just sold my R10s a couple of weeks ago so I could not do a direct comparison, but I have owned the R10s since 2003 and think I have a pretty good handle on how they perform. So without a direct comparison, I would say the PS 1000 better the R10s in bass wt, tightness, and bass detail. The PS 1000 have a better soundstage as well as quite a neat 3d aspect to the sound. To top it off, the PS 1000s are the warmer headphone. That is not to say the R 10s are bright, they are not, it is just on a relative level, they are not as warm as the PS 1000s. R10s have more airy mids, and superior treble extension. However, if we look at the whole sonic picture, not just categories, I prefer the PS 1000. I'm not just saying that because I just spent a a bunch of money on a new headphone and want to convince myself they really are better. I LOVE certain aspect of the R10s sound, and they are certainly a very comfortable headphone, however the PS 1000s has enough of what I love about the R10s, but then kills them in the areas I feel the R10s are not up to snuff.
For the record, I am using the EAR HP4 with the PS 1000s and I used the RSA HR2 and the Singlepower MPX 3 with the R10s so I never used both phones with the same amp.

Congrats on your new cans but I have to agree with you after dropping top $, I would expect flawless condition. If it were me, I would send them back but again the wait for the new set will be...?

Thanks for your impressions.

Congratulations. This makes me want to hear the PS1000 again as the new pair at Canjam didn't leave much impression on me probably cause they weren't burnt in.

Completely inexcusable on such expensive headphones - they should be flawless.
Don't Grado have some QC?

E-mail them some photos and basic notes then phone them up, I say.

Congrats! A dream headphone for me.

too bad you still don't have the R10, so you could do some direct comparisons.

What a shame about the condition for the price. Glad you like the sound.

Finally! Thanks for the review. I wish you Grado will take care of the cosmetic issues.

The bad news for me is that after many bad reports of the PS-1000 at CJ2009 I was just starting to consider getting the HD-800 instead (HD-800 is quite cheaper and have greater price diffrence in Canada compared to PS-1000).

Your wallet went quick. This is only the beginning. The PS-1000 will probably rival the HD800 excitement shortly.

Why it doesnt surprised me PS1000+EAR HP4=MAGIC

Congrats! Glad they starting with shipping and maybe more folks will get their PS1000 within short time from now, so we can enjoy a bit of Grado magic thread instead of, well, instead...

Not that nice to know about those scratches etc..., not good. I mean, you was waiting for so long and now this, pfff, man...
If I were you I would contact the dealer directly and tell them your points, just start from there, imo.

Other than that, do post some pics and more impressions please.

THX
