I just got these headphones. First I will start out with the bad. The shinny metal part of these headphones has a couple of chips and some other small scratches plus some scuffing. 6 total in all. What should I do? I paid a lot of money for these and I am a little pissed at their condition. I don't want to be put in a situation where I have to send them back and then wait another 3 months for a new pair. IMO, they should send me a new pair and then when I get it, I will send these back.
Okay now that is out of the way. How about sound impressions out of the box? Now that I have heard these, I don't want to send them back. IMO, these are incredible headphones. When I first picked them up and put them on, my first thought was these are heavy and are going to be uncomfortable. However, after putting them on listening to some tunes, I forgot or was not even conscious they are on my head. If I had to describe the phone in one word, it would be effortless. The PS 1000 somehow put everything out there without being in your face. Compared to the GS 1000s, the mids are more prominent, bass is tighter, and there is more detail. I just sold my R10s a couple of weeks ago so I could not do a direct comparison, but I have owned the R10s since 2003 and think I have a pretty good handle on how they perform. So without a direct comparison, I would say the PS 1000 better the R10s in bass wt, tightness, and bass detail. The PS 1000 have a better soundstage as well as quite a neat 3d aspect to the sound. To top it off, the PS 1000s are the warmer headphone. That is not to say the R 10s are bright, they are not, it is just on a relative level, they are not as warm as the PS 1000s. R10s have more airy mids, and superior treble extension. However, if we look at the whole sonic picture, not just categories, I prefer the PS 1000. I'm not just saying that because I just spent a a bunch of money on a new headphone and want to convince myself they really are better. I LOVE certain aspect of the R10s sound, and they are certainly a very comfortable headphone, however the PS 1000s has enough of what I love about the R10s, but then kills them in the areas I feel the R10s are not up to snuff.
For the record, I am using the EAR HP4 with the PS 1000s and I used the RSA HR2 and the Singlepower MPX 3 with the R10s so I never used both phones with the same amp.
