ATH-PRO700 Appreciation Thread

Since there seem to be an appreciation thread for everything else, I thought I would start one for the ATH-PRO700. I don't see a whole of thread about them and when I do, there seem to be a lot of negative reviews on it. As a casual listener, since aquiring my PRO700 back in November last year, I've found myself listening to music more often during my personal time. Although I tried the ATH-M50 at a local store and found them to ahve a more balanced sound, I still prefer the PRO700. Despite what people have been saying about the PRO700 having coloured and honky attributes, I must say I love the way they sound. The lows are punchy and yet not too overbearing. The mids and highs are just right for a comfortable long term listening. I have not experienced any problem with cracking headband as reported by a few users on this forum or any other built problems for that matter.

I hope there are a few more users out there that found the ATH-PRO700 to be as enjoyable as I did. Please join this thread if you are one of those satisfied owner!!

Thanks for joining the thread OURFPSHERO!! Luckily, my head and ears are smaller and the PRO700 does fit comfortably.

For starters, my ears fully fit inside the cup which I would say is very important in terms of comfort. Secondly, the PRO700 doesn't feel uncomfortably tight on my head though tight enough that it doesn't slip when I'm running around the house or exercising. When I tried the ATH-M50 at a local store, I could feel it slipping slightly every time I lower my head.

Appreciation? Okay, I'll give it a try, although I'm still nursing the top of my head a little from wearing it for hours on public transport today.

-Nice punchy bass. Very present, but just on the right side of overbearing.
-Especially considering the amount of bass, the mids are really surprisingly clear, especially with well-produced material. (Overcompressed stuff will clog them though. The colouration gives some lovely crunch to guitars.
-The rolled-off highs make them very easy to listen to for long periods and very forgiving of subpar recordings.
-Quite easy to drive from portable players.

(Now, where is that PRO700-hate thread, so I can do my complaining? )

No one else is willing to give it a go?

It's been quite some time since the last post on this topic, but I thought about sharing some thoughts.

I have a pair of Allen & Heath's XD-53, which are rebadged ATH-PRO700, but with a metal strip headband instead of the prone to crack stock ATH-PRO700.

I agree with the bass being present but not overpowering, mids seem alright and do seem to meld nicely with the low end, while the slightly rolled off highs do ease any listening fatigue.

These cans are a thing of beauty when fed 24/96 bit-perfect audio, really brings them to life, but they still hold their own with lossy formats. They are also surprisingly portable, as in they still improve when fed through an amp but have quite good listening levels unamped. After 150 hours, the sound smoothed out a bit, which I found good, though it could just have been due to coming from different sounding headphones.

Now, I'm very happy to listen to them at all times, the only thing that worried me was the comfort, as they hurted my ears due to them being pressed against the metal cover over the driver. I think my ears got used to it and I no longer feel that :)

Overall, definitely recommended, specially as they have dropped in price considerably biggrin.gif

I actually own a ATH PRO700 Gold, My second headphone after my AKG k 518 LE, I am very satisfied with it. I will agree that the bass is there and not overpowering.

I like it even though now I have another Sennheiser, and ordered an AKG K 270 mk 2. I think I will still keep this and use it as my main.

Its easy to power, and quite portable, and why I bought gold is because I take it as a collection too =)

I would say I take frequent breaks while listening to music, or watching movies, and I think everyone should in order to protect our ears. heh

To me, the mids and highs are just nice too, I can hear what is there and what I want to. IMO, everything about the sound is nice, nothing too much or too little.

At the start I have issue with the comfort because the padding is not thick, I always feel that my ears are touching the driver. Now, I readjusted the headband, it feels much better, less pain, however sometimes I still feel that way, but I take breaks from hour to hour, so its not much of an issue for me now. =)

I have owned the ATH-PRO700 for a few years now. I don't have much to compare them too (Grado SR80). I also agree that the bass it there as it should be being a Dj style headphone. And the bass is not overpowering. I like the mids and highs for I am a electronic, positive hardcore, metal head. Actually I can appreciate most genre's. I have now started thinking of finding a desktop amp/DAC for them. Very new to the site and talking about headphones atsmile.gif
