How can anybody be sure if you can't compare 2.0 and 3.0 side by side with the same hardware? Also, if it did, wouldn't apple make a big deal about it? Seems nonsense to me.

Apple never makes a big deal about sound quality. Ever.

Moved up to 3.0 on my Touch 2G (I paid the $$$) and can't say I notice any SQ differences. Still sounds very good via HP out with the Westone 3s, ADDIEMs and the rest of my IEMs.

I was assuming that they did improve the sound somehow. If they really did that, why wouldn't they advertise it during the press conference or include the change in the change log? Making a major sound improvement on a phone/ipod and not releasing any info just doesn't make any sense in marketing point of view. That's why I think they didn't and this speculation is just false.

My thoughts on Apple and the SQ are on the same page as yours, though may not be as extreme. (they do use qulity chips)

What I'm saying is Apple silently tweaks sound quality, if at all, and never notes it or makes a big deal about it. They didn't cite improved sound quality between the iPod touch 2G and 1G which was actually the case. But that only demonstrates the hardware front.

On the software side of things, there have been at least one or two iPod firmwares in the past that produced notable changes in the sound quality of the supported units. These improvements were not listed among the changes. It's just not something Apple does. It might make marketing sense to list it, but it doesn't matter to them.

mm does sound less bloated to me (in the bass regions) - actually lower bass response definately seems to have been reduced to the positive IMO

and upper regions slightly better too .....

further testing required

Ooops, 3GS runs on Cirrus Logic audio codec :/
iPhone 3G S Carries $178.96 BOM and Manufacturing Cost, iSuppli Teardown Reveals — iSuppli Corporation
I have a bad feeling about this.
Anyone compared 3GS to 3G in terms of SQ (Cirrus Logic vs. Wolfson)?

3G S has more clarity, tighter bass and more prominent treble. This is a cursory informal comparison. My 3G is on 2.2.1 though.

So it's not so crappy as 6g iPods Classic (also with Cirrus Logic)?
Never heard the 6G, but hands down definitely better than my 5.5G Video (and I think the Video used a Wolfson).

I am waiting for someone to write a review about iPhone 3GS SQ.
I did not compare but it seem thinner and more detailed. Not quite sure whether it is better or worse.

shouldn't be hard since apple set some sort of record for highest amount of smart phones sold in a certain time period (forget how long it was) I am sure there are many other head-fier's running around that could give a comparison I have yet to upgrade to the 3gs yet but I am indeed looking into it. Also while not commenting on the os itself I think the iphone amped sounds pretty different then the classic amped.

Yes more people need to post impressions on 3gs SQ
